The sun was rising above the hills as the town turned into country. The three girls were driving across the coast and loving every minute of it. Kate and Laurie were screaming along to the Disney songs playlist that was blasting through the car and Julia was stood up on her seat with the majority of her body hanging out the window. Kate said she wasn't allowed to smoke in the car so instead she resorted to this.
"Hey Julia get back in here!" Laurie said as she pulled at Julia's jacket.
"Yeah what's up?" Julia murmured as she tried ever so desperately to fix her wind swept hair.
"I was just telling Kate how my brother lives somewhere down here." Laurie's older brother had left school and moved out of home about a year ago. And him and a few mates came down here to live on the beach.
"Sweet wanna pop in for a visit?" Kate laughed at how laid back Julia was and Laurie nodded.
"I am down!" Kate laughed as she leaned forward to join the conversation.
And so it was decided that the girls would go crash at Laurie's brothers place. And with that decision came a large fold-out map from the glove box which Julia attempted to read but in defeat handed it to Kate.•
Laurie pulled up to the little group of houses about forty minutes later with a grin on her face. It had been ages since she'd last seen her brother. And so when a door was thrown open to inspect their new arrival Laurie screeched and ran over to be swept up in a hug.
"Laurie dude what are you doing here!" The shaggy work shirt wearing man asked.
"Mum and dad were pissing me off! So I came to visit my favourite brother!" She smiled as her brother put her back on the ground.
"And who are these chicks you've brought with yu?" Laurie's brother asks as Julia and Kate make their way up to the house.
"Ah this is Julia, she plays drums in the band I was telling you about on the phone!"
"Ah yes, pot head drummer with a thing for vandalism!" Julia laughed and shook his out stretched hand.
"And that's Kate, our guitarist."
"Ah Yes nerd with a cool side and a talent for keeping these two outta trouble." Now it was Kate's turn to shake hands with the stranger who seemed to already know the girls.
"I talked about you guys and the band for like an hour! Anyway this is my eldest brother Dusty!" Laurie said finally putting a name to the friendly face. Dusty soon ushered the three girls inside and welcomed them into the house.
"Yeah it's no mansion but the Mrs likes it." Dusty laughed as they sat down in the lounge room.
"Oh yeah you two'll love Mrs!" Laurie laughed as she let out a long low whistle. Julia and Kate were both thinking Mrs would have been Dusty's wife so when a shaggy golden retriever came bounding into the room they were both a little taken aback.
There was a bit of small talk before Dusty started asking about the band.
"So how'd you lot come to be in a band?" Dusty asked as he lit up a smoke.
"Bit rude to not offer your guests!" Laurie laughed but Dusty pulled the pack away before the blond could grab one.
"Not in my house young lady. I am trying to cut down meself don't need you starting too." Laurie just rolled her eyes and flopped back into the beanbag that was sitting in the ground.
"Well we all met in detention and i think it was a bit of a joke at first but than we actually had a go at it and we turned out pretty good!" Kate said giving a answer to Dusty's question.
"Yeah, who knows you lot could be the next Beatles!" Dusty laughed.
"No mate. No one replaces the Beatles." Julia said with a scarily serious face. Laurie went on to say that it was the most serious Julia had probably ever been in her whole life!
They talked about music and the band for a little longer before Dusty announced he needs to be getting to work.
"Now Yorkshire's about a twenty minute drive that-a-way but I think I've got frozen pizzas in the fridge if you get hungry. I'll be back before tea anyways." Dusty said as he headed for the door. "Oh and I've got a bit of a seat up in me garage back from my band days, feel free to muck about with it."
And with that he was gone, leaving the girls with absolute responsibility for themselves and a need for adventure.
