Then it Snowed
By: Kat Flora
The month was early January and thick snow covers the ground. Roads of slush and fields of white. The new year has just begun and the resolutions I’ve made are little to none. The cold wind and the thin air, like needles poking at every part of vulnerable skin. Everyone fixated on the idea of a restart. The mistakes you’ve made are still there and not forgotten, the past is still the past, today is still present, and the future is still undetermined.
I was walking down the street that day with the sidewalks of ice and mush. No school meant a snow day. Though while amongst the kids playing in their yard with red cheeks and cold noses, I was the only one out and about. The wind mesmerized my fiery hair like a cobra as it kept getting in my face and I to constantly keep tucking it back in my hat. I was heading downtown to buy some hot chocolate as a car pulled up next to me, rolled down the window, and kept walking trying to seem uninterested hoping they would go away.
“Elizabeth, Wait up!” said the familiar yet unwelcomed voice of Savannah. From her simple red scarf around her next loosely, to the natural black locks as hair lay over her shoulders, and the warm brown eyes she held, I had a little monster around her named Jealousy. I stopped and turned around unwillingly, she was motioning her hand for me to come over there, and I did.
“Hey Savannah, how’s it going?” I asked trying to sound plain and sour so she would get frustrated with me and drive off, unfortunately, it didn’t work.
“Hey Liz, long time no see. I’m doing great, having the big One Seven this weekend and you’re invited. Guess who else is invited..." There she goes rambling on and on.
She'd tell me all about her party from whose going to the party till the very last ingredient in each dish. Then she'll forget to tell me "the most important part" which usually the guy she likes.
Something caught my eye in the alley across the way, as I looked closer I saw a person in the shadow of the building. I could tell it was a boy around around my age, I blinked and he was still there. The strange boy brought his hand up to his face, then put his index finger against his cold red lips.
"Helloooo, Earth to Elizabeth. Are you even listening?" She snapped at me, surprising me, bringing my focus back to her.
"Yeah sorry it's just... Cold out here.." I said and god I needed her to leave. My fingers, nose, and toes feel like they were about to fall off.
"Okay Sorry, are you coming or not?" The apology didn't seem very sincere or maybe it's just because I preferred her chocolate eyes over my icey orbs, her dark locks to me red hair, and her tan skin to my paleness.
"Yeah, I'll have to ask but I can stop by." I said boringly
"Alright well I have to go, see you then!" She said as she rolled up her window and drove off.
I sighed and looked over towards the alley, the boy was no longer there. When I went to go cross the road something touched my nose, looking up I saw that it was snowing again. The road was slick and the wind was brisk, as I approached the alley shivers went down my spine. The alley was dark, dreary, and silent. Something moved and I tried to look closer just as simultaneous screams filled my ears. I jumped instantly and looked around. It was just kids having a snowball fight. I sucked in a deep breath and held it im az I took my first step into the alley.
When my foot hit the cold, wet, icy, ground I became unsure, the wind kicked up and the dim alley light completely blew out. I couldn't see very well and it seemed like a giant maze. Every step I took echoed off the walls and I felt as if I was being watched. Soo. I finally could see the other side, only it wasn't the other side, it was the same way I came in. The person emerged from the shadow and seemed on edge. There was a paper in his hand, he knelt down and sat a rock on top of it. He then looked up, once again put his finger to his lips and walked away.
The kids in town were still having a snowball fight, their playful screams still filling the streets, though I felt like I was in there for hours. I looked down in front of my feet and picked up the paper. I again held my breath while the words on the paper said.....
