3 YEARS LATER
College was all that it seemed and it was going better than I could ever have imagined. Derek and I both got into Penn State, which was within reach of our backyard - curse Pennsylvania for being so ridiculous with its size. Our sophomore year was treating us well. And yes, we remained together since that event. The day after that event became the official day we now say our relationship started.
This world without him also consisted of a world without Allegra. I do know, or I heard anything about what college she went to or what happened. Some say her cousin showed up at the house and she ran off in the distance, never to return again. As for him, his crimes got him first degree murder charges on 3 victims, statutory rape and extortion. He's rotting at Redd Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution for the rest of his life.
I closed the door of my dorm room and locked it, entering the overcrowded room, making my way to my desk adjacent to my XL college-sided bed. As I typed away at my computer, I cut my eyes to the small lavender shoe box under my bed. I had just recently decided to out them in a box after my attempt to hide the small, yet growing pile of letters became so noticeable that I found myself cleverly making up some lie to my pesky roommate to keep her at bay. She was under the impression they were romantic from a lover, I clearly knew they were not.
They were letters from him, cleverly leaving out the address from Redd Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution. The letters remained all sealed sealed and unopened by me. I refused to open them, but still kept them. I even purposely bough the lavender box to place them in. There were my secret and now a secret I wish I could keep from myself. Were they still too much a part of me to let go?
A loud pattern of vibrations rattling from my cellphone to my desk took me out of my trance. The caller unknown and the number unrecognizable. Derek at one his pranks again? Smiling presumptuously, I shook my head and answered the phone.
It was an automated voice ringing through my ears, I almost hung up until I heard "This call is from an inmate at Redd Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution."
All the air left my lungs leaving every part of was frozen solid, devoid. Completely shut off from time and space. Yet somehow my phone stayed at my ear.
"Kerri?"
It was him. It was Mr. Leto."Kerri, I know you're there."
I finally gasped for breath. My mouth was still open, but my tongue lay limp. The bandage of his voice ripped off the wound, his wound attached to my mind and soul.
"Well, since I have your ear... I know what you did, Kerri."
Silence echoed. And the would was ripped into with a knife it grew. There's no way he could know, he's just bluffing.
"What I did?" I croaked out.
"Your....incident." The word slid out of his mouth with a confident ease.
"You're crazy, calling me after all this time and your stupid letters, who do you think you are -"
"I know about the murder." he said.
I dropped the phone. I stood there too afraid to pick it up. Some how his voice still rag though the rom crystal clear. I could feel him there, behind me, his body against mine, just as before. This game that I thought was long over, has just begun, again.
His voice echoed through the receiver, "Looks like you owe me a visit."
