It was lunch time. The bell rang and I sat down at my spot with my best friend Bethany.
"What's wrong Kenny? You haven't touched your cookies. I made them homemade." Bethany pushed a chocolate chip cookie against my lips.
"Sorry Beth. Bad day is all." Even though I didn't feel like eating, I took a bite out of the cookie anyways. I knew Bethany wanted to bring them to her mom in the hospital, according to her mother's nurse however, she wasn't supposed to eat solid foods. "Did you see your mom last night?"
"Yeah." Bethany frowned thinking about it. "Doctors are giving her a few days to live."
"Sometimes doctors are wrong Beth."
"Anyways whats bugging you? It's not Ryder right? Or Ronnie Van Zant?"
"It's Ronnie. I overheard him talking to Gary about me."
"Oh cute Gary?" Bethany giggled and I elbowed her arm. "I see you blushing I know you like him. And ya'll will get married at sunset..."
"Not funny!"
"Ronnie's a douchebag don't listen to any shit he sayin bout ya."
"Well the thing is." I pressed a cigerette to my lips, making sure to watch the hallways, didn't wanna get caught smoking by coach Skinner again. "Ronnie was saying 'it's time man you just gotta do it.'"
"And he's suggesting he do it with you?"
"I guess. I'm kinda done with meaningless sex though, once a slut always a slut."
"You aren't a slut Kenny. What happend with Ryder ain't your fault. You just didn't choose a great way to deal with all that pain yknow."
"I don't know what's worse for me. Sleeping around or smoking."
That day dragged on. My last class was math, when I left, Ronnie and Gary were standing outside the door. Ugh, are they stalking me now?
Ignoring them, I walked as fast as I could to my locker, which wasn't going to do me much good, it was alot closer to the math room then I would have wanted.
"Hey." Ronnie was gone, so were alot of the other rowdy teenagers, most of them skipped last period anways. Gary Rossington stood infront of me, leaning against a locker with his arms crossed. I'd only talked to him a few times at a boring assembly last year.
"What's up?" I tried my best to control my blushing, when it didn't work, I just made up an excuse that probobly wasn't believable. "Sorry. Put on too much makeup this morning."
"I was just wondering if you wanted to maybe...hangout tonight. If ya aint busy."
"I heard Ronnie talking to you." Fuck Kennedy. "Don't worry I'm used to it. At my place at seven. Parents are out. Little bro is at a sleepover tonight."
"See you then."
I watched the clock, I killed time by finishing my English essay. It was slightly dark out, which may or may not have caused me some anxiety. Gary was always so sweet, maybe a little moody at times, you observe alot sitting in those hallways.
"Nice place. Told my folks I'm stayin at Ronnie's for the night." Gary shut the door behind him and hung up his jacket.
"My room is upstairs." I slid my sweater off, now I was only wearing a pink tank top. "C'mon I'll show you."
It was stupid, but I felt something as soon as I connected my hand with his. I could feel heat in my cheeks, but I chose to ignore it. I sat myself down on my bed, Gary shyly sat next to me.
"Are you nervous?" I asked him, fiddling with my hands.
"Not really. I guess maybe a little."
"You know you can kiss me if you want to."
When we kissed, it felt like when we held hands, only more intense. This feeling I couldn't brush aside. There was some sort of spark and I couldn't ignore it.
"Are you doing okay? You seem a little out of it." Gary pulled away, and gazed into my eyes.
"I'm good. You?"
"Yeah."
Our lips connected again, his hand brushed from my breast to my thigh. I smiled a bit, carefully sliding his belt off, clenching it in my hand, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him into a deeper kiss.
"Do you feel any different?" I asked, Gary layed his head on my chest, half smiling while running his fingers along my collarbone.
"Yeah actully." We stayed like that for awhile, by now it was almost ten thirty, I had gotten tired and planned on sleeping, however the phone next to my bed had been ringing, it had to be important for this late at night.
"Hello?"
"Kennedy. It's Rose. Beth's mom." She sounded... well not great. I knew her lung cancer was getting bad, she didn't even sound like herself anymore.
"Everything okay?" I looked over to Gary, who was lighting up a smoke not paying attention. I returned my attention to the phone call, I became very concerned when all I heard was Rose crying.
"What's wrong Rose?"
"It's Bethany. She's gone. I found her...just."
It took everything in me not to scream. I hung the phone up. Fuck Gary is gonna see me cry.
"Gary get out. Just get the fuck out!"
"What..."
"Just get out."
