The next few months were time we took to adjust to what happend. Last Friday Gary dropped out of school, Ronnie and I were focused on how to throw the best graduation party the school had ever seen, I was in charge of how to get Crystal to show up for him. Considering her and I were not on speaking terms, this would be difficult.
"Morning darlin." As I opened my eyes, I pulled the blanket over my bare chest, greeting Gary who sat beside me, positioned between my hips and legs.
"Slept good huh? It's almost nine oclock." Gary asked me, placing a kiss on my forehead. Nodding, I slipped out of bed, sliding a shirt and jeans on. The day of the party was arriving quicker then I'd desired, in fact I didn't even have a dress.
"Don't stress about this baby. You'll look great in whatever you wear." I looked away from the shiny dresses hung up carefully in the closet and towards a smiling Gary. "Why don't you just wear the raccoon costume from Halloween?"
Laughing, I rolled my eyes playfully, then punched his shoulder in the same humerous manner.
----
To my luck, I eventually found a dress that pleased me and gave me confidence. Even though he'd dropped out and swore he'd never look at those doors again, Gary agreed to come to the dance with me. After the ceremony which I couldn't stand (people actully crying becuase this shit was over made me sick) we made our way into the dance hand and hand. Part of the fun was neither one of us knowing how to dance and just laughing at eachother, although we had to muffle our laughter when the slow dance song came on."Why don't you come outside for a second?" Gary asked. Wanting to get away from the crowd, I wandered out the doors with him. As soon as we made our way into a private space and sat on a fence, Gary turned to look at me, for the first time it seemed I couldn't tell what he was thinking just by his eyes.
"You wanna do something real stupid? Just like we used to when we started this whole forbidden romance?" Gary's words flowed out so beautifully, reminded me of a perfectly written poem.
"I'm always down for that." I answered rather bluntly, pressing a cigarette to my lips but restraining from lighting it. " Why what were you thinking?"
"I don't know. Wanna run away and get married?"
"Gary how much whisky have you drank tonight?" Laughing nervously, I carefully watched his facial expression.
"Nah I'm serious. Drunk or not I think we should go get married. Then we can start making beautiful kids."
"How about one life changing commitment at a time okay Gary?"
So whether or not I'd be viewed as stupid for this descion, or told I was too young, I'd accepted his offer. We'd agreed that everyone would be informed after we did it, tonight we still had that party to go to.
But for all the right reasons it was the last thing on my mind.
