1 Week Later

I had been constantly visiting, being there by her side for as long as I could. She was comatose and had been for a week. The doctors said she was in a stable condition, but I shouldn't be surprised if she wakes up and isn't the same anymore. She could've suffered major brain damage, and she would be very lucky if she didn't.

Everyday I was here, talking to her and hoping she would wake up sometime soon. I was also told she doesn't have the best chance of living, and she was hanging on by a thread. The chance of her even waking up was slim.

In my mind, I had convinced myself it was alright. Call it what you want, but I'm not gonna say I was in denial. All I was doing was trying to think positively.

"Y'know, when you told me how you felt, I wasn't sure if I was happy or not," I said, only hearing the heart monitor in response. "You thought you would die, that's why you said it, but at least I know how you feel. You wouldn't have said that if you didn't feel like that, right? You wanted me to know how you felt in case you would go."

I heard the door open and looked over in horror. My greatest nightmare and worry so far was how her parents would react. Now I was there to see if they were gonna kill me or not.

Bill stood there, a menacing look in his narrowed eyes. His jaw was clenched as his eyes took a quick glance at his comatose daughter, before they went straight back to me. His wife on the other hand was just plain worried and was too focused on Jackie to be mad at me.

Betty brought a chair to her bedside and reached for Jackie's hand, her lips pressed together as she tried to to cry. When I looked back Bill, he had his hands in his pockets and still had his eye on me, making sure I got the message that I was not in his favour at all. He nodded his head towards the side to indicate that we talk.

I stood up from the chair and we went to the other side of the room. When I looked at Bill again, I noticed his eyes didn't seem so threatening anymore, only exhausted. He was tired of being on my case all the time and didn't understand why I still had the nerve to be here.

"What happened to her?" Bill asked. "Was it the drugs that landed her in there?"

I nodded, feeling somewhat ashamed. "It was too strong for her after she'd been off them for a while. She must have found it somewhere she forgot about and just... It hasn't been easy, for her to erm... y'know, try stay clean. I just... I'm really sorry I wasn't there to stop her."

"You better be," Bill said. "I don't wanna fight or create a scene here, it ain't the place and it's just gonna stress everyone out, but you better be careful from here on. I respect that you've been here by her side since coming back and have been remaining loyal even now when you have the chance to run off, but it doesn't mean I respect you yourself and what you did to her. That stuff is earned, and you lost mine a while back."

I nodded, sitting down on a chair in the corner of the room as he went to his wife and daughter's side to be there so he could support Betty emotionally. She wasn't taking this very well, and I could imagine very easily why.

She held Jackie's hand and begged for her to wake up, telling her how much she loved her and how she hoped she could hear her. Jackie obviously meant a lot to them, she was still their little girl. I remembered that she was still only 21, which was still incredibly young.

I heard them talking about her brother visiting or something, which made me sort of anxious. Jackie never talked about him much and I hadn't met him, so if he turned up while I was here I didn't know what to expect.

All I knew was that he was doing time for theft. Jackie always told me he was a good man and an amazing brother to her, but he just ended up in a bad crowd. He had been sentenced to 2 years in prison and must have recently gotten out.
