*Spencer*
The past 3 months have been the craziest of my life, which is saying a lot. I didn't plan to spend the next months after we were discharged from the hospital now this way. The two of us getting over paranoia, PTS, and horrific nightmares. Watching Carter's ongoing battle with bipolar which was resurfaced after the whole situation. The whole experience was terrifying, but it taught me a few things. A.) You are stronger than you think, B.) True love is real, and B.) Cherish the little things. As broken as I felt, love helped mend everything.
I stood outside Carter's door nervously, stomach twisted into knots, butterflies stampeded in my stomach. No, forget butterflies. More like the whole zoo. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. She poked her head through the glass panel before she opened the door. Carter smiled and went to pull the door open.
"Spencer!" She jumped into my arms and I spun around, and set her down. I wrapped her in a warm hug.
"I wasn't expecting you." Carter continued.
"Sorry."
"You're fine."
"I was uhm, wondering if maybe you wanted take a walk with me?"
"Certainly. Let me grab my coat."
She looked great in her navy striped shirt, jeans and ebony-colored combat-boots. She wore a maroon coat and snowflakes stuck to her hair and eyelashes. We walked down the snow flecked sidewalk, casually talking. I love the way she laughed, smiling so widely with those gorgeous dimples of hers.
She looked away for a moment and I got on my knee. She looked back and a mix of surprise and confusion crossed her face.
"Carter, thank you so much for everything. You are my best friend, the light of my life. You're a shoulder to cry on, and the only person who understands me perfectly. You're the only person I would want to spend the rest of my life with. I was wondering if you would give me the honors of marrying you and making me me the luckiest man ever to walk the earth?" I asked, pulling the ring box out of my pocket.
Her mouth fell open.
"Did we meet at the Smithsonian? That's a definite yes!" She cried, tears streaming across her face. I slid the ring around her finger.
I stood up and kissed her. It was a gentle one, one that encased you in warmth and made you forget about everything around you.
Love. It conquers all.
