"I know that dad was a dick but I miss him." I admit to my mom hoping she can hear me. I know she won't answer but I still talk. "I miss him, mom. I don't know why." I hold her hand and rest my forehead on our hands. I sit in that chair for some time before Lilly comes in.

"Hey." She says with a soft smile.

"Hey." I return her smile with a weaker version.

"Why don't you come get some food and rest. She'll be here in the morning." Lilly says.

"I can't leave her." I say.

"Alright. She'll be okay, I promise." I give Lilly a slight smile and nod and she walks out of the room. I continue to sit in the chair. I don't talk. Just fold my arms on the bed and put my head down. I don't know how long I've been waiting for mom to wake up but I hear the door open and after a few seconds I feel a hand on my shoulder blade. I look up and see Mrs. Marksen setting a plate of food on the stand next to the bed.

"You should really eat." She says softly.

"I know, I'm just not hungry." I tell her.

"You've been sitting here for almost 6 hours and as far as I know you haven't eaten since lunch."

"I know." I say. "I'll try to eat." She gives me a small smile.

"Good." She nods.

"Thank you, Mrs. Marksen." I tell her.

"Just call me Amanda." She smiles. I nod and with that she leaves. I look at the plate of food. Waffles and eggs. My favorite. Mom used to make it for me when I felt sad.

I start remembering what happened when Nicky died. The police came and called my mom. She took me home and made me waffles and eggs to cheer me up. I didn't even touch them. She was so worried about me. I couldn't sleep for a few days and when I did, I would wake up screaming from nightmares. I know mom would want me to eat and sleep.

I decide to eat the food at least a little. I eat one of the waffles and about half the eggs before setting the food aside. I lay my head back down and eventually fall asleep.

I wake up to a hand on my shoulder. I look up and see it's my moms.

"Mom." I breathe out before hugging her.

"Hey, baby." She says weakly.

"How you feeling?" I ask as I pull away from the hug.

"A bit of a headache but I feel fine. What happened?" She asks. Shit. What do I say?

"Uh, d-dad's gone." I say as tears well up and a lump grows in my throat.

"What?" She asks.

"Dad's d-dead." I repeat. I can feel tears come down my cheeks.

"Honey." Mom pulls me into another hug.

"Why do I miss him so much?" I ask through tears.

"Because he's still your father." Mom says. "Even if he hasn't been accepting." We sit hugging for a little before I pull away and look at my watch. It's 5 am. The door opens and mom and I look to see who it is. Lilly and her mom walk in.

"Hey." Lilly says with a smile.

"Hey." I smile back slightly.

"Hi, I'm Amanda. Lilly's mom."

"Come on, we should get ready for school." Lilly says as she stands next to me.

"Do I really have to go to school?" I ask.
