Katie slept with Paisley for a measly hour, before loudly getting woken up by her cries. She sat up, patting her back. "Hey.." She whispered. "Shh.. It's okay, Pais.." She looked up at her parents, lost. "I don't know what to do." She stressed. Those cries were killing her.
Jo stood up. "Are you going to breast or bottle feed her? I'm sure she's hungry." She said, putting her hand next to Katie's.
"Breastfeed." She answered, patting Paisley's diapered bottom.
"Okay. I'll get a lactation nurse in here to help." She could've probably helped her herself. She breastfed Katie was she was a baby, but it was best for her to have a lactation nurse.
A few minutes passed before a nurse came in. Katie's heart was breaking the longer those high pitched cries went on. She felt like she was torturing her. "I know, Pais, she's on her way. I promise." She placed a few kisses on her head. She barely knew how to hold a baby, trying to calm one was ten times harder.
A lactation nurse came in, spending twenty minutes trying to get Paisley to latch on. She finally did, but only ate for fifteen minutes. "This is probably going to be normal for a few days while she adjusts. She'll eat for short periods of time. You'll have to feed her more often though, to make up for it." The nurse explained.
"That part sucks." Jo said, once the nurse walked out. "It's a lot of late nights, but it's so worth it."
"I don't even mind." Katie smiled, watching Paisley eat. It wasn't comfortable, but hey, her baby was content. If she wasn't crying, then Katie was happy. She pulled her little hat off to see her hair; she had a ton of it. However, Paisley was not a fan of cold ears. She unlatched, quivering her lip. Katie was quick to act, putting the hat back on her head. "Sorry, sorry.. it's okay, keep eating." She whispered, getting her to latch back on. She smiled, quite proud of herself to get her to eat again. "Good job, Pais."
Paisley fell back to sleep while she ate, her little mouth hanging open. Katie wiped the corners of her mouth with her gown.
"Don't forget to burp her, otherwise you'll have a very upset baby with a belly ache." Jo reminded her. It was fun to watch Katie take on this whole motherhood thing. She was so excited to teach her everything she knew.
"Oh." Katie laid her on her chest, patting her back. She was scared she'd wake her back up, but Paisley didn't seem to care. She smirked when she got a tiny burp out of her, plus some spit up. "Was that supposed to happen??" She asked, alarmed.
"It's all that's going to happen in the next couple of months." Jo laughed. "It's very normal. Be ready to keep those cloths around everywhere. You're going to need them."
Katie grinned, kissing Paisley hat-covered head. "God, I love her so much already." She smiled.
"Want to swaddle her? She seems like a cuddler. She'll probably love it." Jo grinned, grabbing one of her swaddlers; the purple one. She laid it in front of Katie's lap. "All you have to do is lay her down. Put her head in the corner."
Katie gently laid her down, much to Paisley's displeasure. She hadn't been away from her mother's warmth yet. "One second, baby." She whispered, listening to her mother and successfully swaddling her.
Paisley immediately calmed down, relaxing her face. She was even more calm when Katie picked her back up.
"This way, you can lay her down if you get tired. She'll feel like she's being cuddled." Jo explained, smiling at her granddaughter. It was so surreal.
"Want to hold her?" Katie asked, looking up at her. Of course, Jo couldn't decline. She washed her hands and eagerly took her from Katie. "Hi, baby Pais!" She whispered. She sat down in her chair. "I'm your grandma. I swear I'm not that old though." She joked. "Call me whatever you want. I think Nana makes me sound the youngest, but as long as you don't choose Granny I'm game for anything." She gently caressed her cheek. "Katie.. she is-" She looked up at Katie, who was fast asleep. "beautiful." She smiled.
