"Chris?" Katie called out, wandering the house. He was nowhere to be found. She went downstairs into the kitchen, finding a note.
Hey Katie,
I can't do this anymore. I'm sorry. It's insane. We're sixteen! I can't be a father yet. I've got a whole life in front of me and being a dad isn't a part of the plan for a long time. I shouldn't have waited this long, I know. I really do love you, but it's all too much. I wish you the best.
Chris
Katie's heart sunk to the bottom of her stomach. She read over the note at least five more times. This was a joke right? Maybe an early April Fool's prank? She crumbled up the note, throwing it into the trash. She didn't react. She just went on about her day.
They were supposed to go shopping today, for their baby. She went from having a baby with her boyfriend to a single mom in less than 12 hours, and none of it made sense.
She took a deep breath and stood up. The house was empty, like always. It was rare for her parents to not be at work. She grabbed her keys and made her trip to the store. She still needed so many things, and she had so little time.
While searching, she realized how little she'd thought about this. There were so many little things that went into this. Was she going to breast feed or bottle feed? Would she dress her daughter in cotton or polyester? There were at least thirty different types of cribs to choose from. She felt lost in the store.
While reading the side of a formula box, she felt a sharp pain rip through her stomach. She squeezed her eyes shut, setting the box down. She gulped, there was no way she was giving birth in a Babies-R-Us. She refused. Plus, she was 27 weeks, it was crazy early.
The first thing she did, when she could stand up straight again, was pull her phone out of her purse. She dialed her mother's number, which was a hopeless cause. Josephine Karev would never answer her damn phone at work. Katie's only choice was to leave a message.
"Hey mom, I-I know you're busy. I get it, but if you could just call me back please. It's important." She said, her breath shaky. She promised herself she wouldn't freak out. It just made everything worse.
She put her phone in her pocket and rested her hand on her stomach as she made her way to the onesie department. "Too early, sweetie. Not yet, okay?" She whispered. She probably looked crazy, but she honestly didn't care right now.
She let out the biggest breath when she heard her phone ring, with her mother's ringtone. She immediately answered, hearing her worried mother's voice.
"Are you okay? Do I need to leave? I can leave, Katie, you know that."
She used to not be so crazy protective, but she married Alex Karev.
"I'm okay.. I think. It just hurt a lot, but it lasted like a minute, and it hasn't happened again." She explained. "I'm almost done shopping and I'll go home, I swear. It just really freaked me out. Th-This isn't actually it, right?"
"If it hasn't happened again, then you're okay. Please hurry and go home. I'm leaving now, I'll be home in fifteen." She said, grabbing her purse.
Katie hung up and threw two more onesies in the shopping cart. She had so much more to buy, but obviously her daughter was not a fan of shopping. She paid for everything and went home, leaving all of her items in the car. She'd move them later, or make her dad do it when he got home.
Jo took Katie's coat and purse as she came in. "Go sit and relax." She ordered, pointing to the couch.
Katie usually would've been stubborn and protested, but she agreed with her mother this time. She wasn't taking any chances this time.
Jo followed her to the couch and pulled Katie's feet into her lap, giving her a foot massage. She was pregnant once too. She knew how brutal it was. "Where's Chris?" She asked. She was pissed. He should've been with her.
"Gone." She said, keeping her eyes shut. "He left this morning. Left a note. Gone." She sighed.
"What the hell do you mean?" She asked, fuming. Out of every horrible thing Jo went through in her lifetime, giving birth without her partner was, thankfully, something she didn't have to worry about. The fact that Chris stood her up like that, in such a crucial time in her life made her want to kill him.
"Is it bad that I had a feeling?" She asked. "He'd been different, distant even. I was kind of expecting it." She frowned.
"You can do this without him. I promise you that. You have me and your dad, always. You know that. He was just some shitty sixteen year old anyways." She said, a smirk coming to her face.
Katie grinned, opening her eyes to look at her. "He sucked." She quietly laughed.
Jo smiled at her, taking her hand and squeezing it. She knew Katie could do it. It was going to be hard as hell on her, but she could definitely do it.
