What felt like ten minutes was actually fifteen seconds. In those fifteen seconds, I don't think I took one single breath. Bruno and Carlo both walked into the room with happy smiles upon their faces. Bruno breaks the silence.
"Suprise, you thought we were having a boring business dinner when it was actually a dinner with your childhood best friend, but don't worry there will still be some business tossed in." Bruno's voice continuously softens towards the end when he picked up on the awkward vibes in the room.
"Umm, Sylvia will be starting dinner. Why don't you go get changed into the dress you bought and meet us back downstairs," Father said. I couldn't read his facial expression. Me being his only daughter always made him more strict with having a relationship. When I was younger he would encourage Bruno and Carlo to find a woman, but with me, I was told to stay away from guys till the day I die. I know he was joking but I couldn't help pick up the hint of seriousness in his voice.
I go to my room where I catch my breath. This is perfect, not only can I apologize to Grayson for lashing out on him but I can also ask him more about my father's "business". I quickly change into the dress I bought. I guess I should've tried it on in the store, it's a bit shorter then what I would usually wear to a business dinner. I'll be sure to tug it down when I walk int the room. The last thing I need is for my father to have my head about wearing an inappropriate dress. I wish I would've known the dinner was with Grayson and not one of my father's older business partners. I would've prepared myself better, but this will have to do. I throw my hair into a bun, naturally, since I cut it there are loose hairs that frame my face perfectly. I throw on a pair of white pumps and walk downstairs. Once I'm downstairs I see everyone having a drink.
"Angelica, help yourself to the drinks at the bar," My father said quite joyfully. The awkward vibe from earlier is gone and it seems like everyone is having fun. I walk over to the bar where I grab a glass of champagne. I notice that the men have broken out my father's favorite whiskey he drinks when he has a guest over. I walk over and join everyone on the couch. I sit in between Bruno and Carlo so I'm facing Grayson who is sitting next to my father.
"After you ran out last night, I invited Grayson over to have dinner with us." I felt Graysons eyes on me but I kept my eyes on my father. "We've been needing to have a meeting anyway, but don't worry we have already got all of the business out of the way so we are just going to be having a good time for the rest of the night. You two can catch up after dinner while your brothers and I have a video meeting with a partner from Russia." Probably about drugs.
While we waited for dinner I kept quit as everyone talked about what happened after I left the wedding. Considering everything they told me I was especially glad that I left. They played those cliche wedding games so I'm not mad I missed out on that. Shortly after Sylvia called us in for dinner. Father took his usual seat at the end of the table while I sat at the other end. Grayson sat by me to my right and Bruno and Carlo sat closer to our father on my left. The table has three seats on each side and two at the end. My spot was always my mothers before she died so father always told me to sit here. I remember him telling me one day that my mother's plan was to fill all six chairs on the sides with kids.
Sylvia places the main dishes in front of us. Grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. She then sits on the right side closer to father. Father starts off the conversation with satire.
"This is crazy, last time I saw everyone sitting at the table like this was over a decade ago, now look at you guys." Me and Grayson chuckle at his comment as we look at each other.
"How's your mom? Does she still teach?" I aks Grayson.
"Yeah, but she only does private tutoring. I don't know why, I make enough money so she doesn't have to work, but she loves it so much."
