Once I reach my father's study I don't bother knocking before I barge in.
"Angel, I'm surprised you're not sick of me yet. If you wanted to spend some more time with me you could've just asked and I would've happily obliged." He said without looking up. He must've felt the daggers I was throwing him because he looked up at me with a confused expression. Grayson scurries inside after me trying to stop me but it's too late.
"Why would you keep this from me?"
"What are you talking about Angel?" Father looks at Grayson for a split second before putting his attention back on me.
"My mother didn't die in a plane accident, she was murdered! Why wouldn't you tell me how my own mother actually died? Resentment towards you? If that was the case then you were right, but I only resent you now because you never told me! Everyone knew and here I was being left out of something again, something as important as the death of my own mother!"
"It was for your own protection," father whispered while looking me in the eyes.
"I don't need protection! Stop trying to protect me, I don't want it and I don't need it."
"Obviously you do, you were just attacked, and let us not forget that wasn't the first time." He's yelling now, and I shiver from his statement. "Listen, I planned on telling you everything soon. I just could never find the words, I've been splitting everything up one at a time, but every time you find out about something it doesn't seem to be coming from me but from another source," he says while giving Grayson a death glare. "Grayson, that conversation was a private conversation that was not to leave your mouth, you should know what we do not snitch in this business."
"Don't bring Grayson into this, I begged him to tell me, and I'm glad he did because at this rate I would've never found out about mother until my death bed. Did you ever stop to think that you wouldn't have to hide secrets from me if you would've told me the truth from the day I was born; Why is this whole family full of liars? You, Bruno, Carlo, and even Grayson. I'm tired of it all."
"Angel listen-"
"No you listen," I say cutting off my father. "I'm done. I don't want anything to do with your business and It's obvious if I dont want anything to do with this business then I have nothing to do with this family. I thought when I moved back here -after you ruined my childhood by sending me away for ten years- I would come back to a loving family and have a normal life that I saw in the movies, but I was wrong. The only thing you, Bruno, and Carlo care about is this business, and so do you, Grayson." I say as I turn to look at Grayson. "I thought being back in New York would be better for me but you were right when you said living with grandma was best for me."
"What are you saying?" Grayson speaks for the first time.
"Maybe it's better if I move back to California." I finally admit. I can't help but think of how much easier things were. I don't think I would move in with Grandma but find a place of my own, maybe close to grandma.
"Absolutely not, Angelica you were not raised to be ignorant. You were just attacked and now you want to go to California with little to no protection?" Father is now standing from his desk with a red face.
"I don't care anymore. Do I have to spell it out for you? I. Don't. Want. Your. Protection. I don't need it, and I don't need you. The only thing you have done since I've been back is making things worst. I'm moving back to California and that is final." I go to walk out the door when I'm stopped father's voice.
"Angelica Acardi, if you even pack one bag, you're done. Do you think you don't need my protection? You're wrong, but if you think you know what's best for you then go ahead, go to California without my protection. You'll be dead in a month."
I don't say anything or even turn around, I just walk out of the study and to my room. I hear father start yelling at Grayson for telling me about my mother but I'm glad he did. I'm glad I know the truth about my mother. I walk down to the living room where I hear Bruno and Carlo's voices. Once I walk in they both look at me with confused faces. I'm guessing they can see the tears in my eyes that have yet to fall.
"Angel? Are you okay?" Bruno asks while standing to his feet. Carlo stands up behind him while I shake my head.
"Did Grayson do something to you?" Carlo ask when I don't answer Brunos' question.
"No, he told me everything I needed to know." They both look at each other than turn their attention back to me. "Why didn't you guys tell me about mother?" I see both of their eyes widen. Carlo drops his head and Bruno looks at him to answer searching for an answer.
"We were just listening to father's orders, you were too young to understand anyway. I planned on telling you when you got older but I figured it would be better if you thought she was killed in an accident rather than on purpose."
"Why would that be better?"
"This business can be really...upsetting at times. Father is just trying to make it seem not as bad because, in reality, it's not that bad."
"Are you kidding me? You didn't tell me the real reason my mother died because you are trying to make this business seem better then it actually is. News flash, I dont care about this business and I never will. This business means nothing to me. You, Bruno, and father can have it. You guys don't keep secrets from each other but when it comes to me I guess the rule doesn't apply." I feel the tears finally falling from my eyes. I see Bruno try to come closer to me But I step back. "Why are you trying to comfort me? you don't even have anything to say, it's obvious you don't want to be part of this business either. You're just Father and Carlo's bitch."
I quickly walk away from them and try to go back to my room. Once I reach the bottom of the stairs I look up and see Grayson sitting at the top of them waiting for me. Once he sees me he stands to his feet, but I'm not searching for his sympathy.
"Grayson, I really appreciate you telling me the truth that my family could never do, but right now I don't want to talk to you. Nothing personal, I just need to clear my head."
He looks defeated. We stare at each other for a moment while no one moves. I feel like he's going to try and follow me to my room so I walk out the front door. I see Seth washing the soap off of the car so I walk over to him. Once he sees me he stops what he's doing and gives me a skeptical look. I forgot there's still tears running down my face. Once I get to him he doesn't say anything so I do.
"Do you want to go for a ride?"
