Chapter 8
A few days after the break-in, I'm back at work, against Katherine's wishes.
"I wish you would take some time off. You had a pretty rough weekend."
"Katherine I'm not made of glass. I'm fine and I need to get to class now." I walk away without saying anything else.
I make my way to my classroom just before the kids start arriving. As some of the kids are settling in for the day, I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn my head to see Kyle standing beside my desk along with Ben. Ben smiles then runs over to a little boy he made friends with last week.
"You okay? You left before I woke up this morning." Kyle asks with a concerned look.
"Oh yeah, I met my mom down at the diner for breakfast. Kyle I'm fine and I'll tell you just like I told Katherine, I'm not made of glass." I explain while giving Kyle a perturbed look.
"Fine, someone will be patrolling around the school at all times today. If you need anything just call me."
I nod at Kyle before he turns to walk out of the door. I'm starting to feel like the kids in my class. Kyle and Katherine playing the role of my over-protective parents and me portraying the little child. I know they mean well but this is one of the reasons why I debated moving back home. I knew Katherine would play the protective role, that's what she does best.
Coming back to reality, I settle the kids down and get started with class...

I make my way to the station after leaving the school. I know I'm putting a tight lease on Amy but I want to keep her safe. I have no idea how crazy her ex is but after she revealed what he did to her, I'm not taking any chances.
Walking in, Louise stops me before I can walk in my office.
"Kyle, there is a number on your desk that you need to call back. They didn't leave a name; just said it was urgent."
"Thanks Louis."
I walk in my office to check the number. I dial the number hoping it will be one of the county boys but I don't recognize the voice.
"Hello."
"Yeah, this is Chief Bryan. I was told to call this number back." I explain.
"Oh yes, Chief Bryan, I see that my wife has been keeping you company since my little visit. Tell me chief, is she keeping you warm at night?" My blood starts boiling. Jaime picks the right moment to walk into my office.
"What do you want?" I motion for Jaime to pick up the other phone to listen in on the conversation.
"Well let's see. I want my wife chief and I will do whatever I have to so she will be back where she belongs but I'm a patient man. I know she misses me."
If I could, I would reach through the phone and strangle the life out of him.
"You will never get your hands on her, you bastard. Do you hear me?" My voice starts to rise with every word.
"Now see, you need to talk to Amy about what happens when you underestimate me." He says coolly.
"Is that a threat you son of a bitch?" I'm just about on the edge at this point.
