Alexia’s POV
Sweat dripping down my forehead, eyebrows scrunched together in concentration, my hand barely a blur as it scribbled things down onto the page. Come on, come on, just a little longer…
“And time!” my teacher called in an overly perky voice.
I let out a sigh of relief.
I finished, just as she spoke.
“Please put all your pencils down, and put your answer key in your test when you hand it in. Then have a fantastic summer vacation!”
The desks squeaked and bags were shuffled around as we all stood and packed up our things. One by one we handed in our final exams, saying our goodbyes and some of us getting a little teary.
We had a week or so until graduation, then most of us were leaving for college.
“Did you finish on time?” my teacher asked me when it was my turn to hand in my test.
I nodded. “Yup, just made it.” I gave her a bright smile, one that she returned.
“That’s great honey! I have no doubt that you did great, you always do. Don’t tell anyone, but you were always my favorite,” the old lady said in a whisper, giving me a wink. I felt my cheeks pink slightly, and I continued to smile.
“Thank you Mrs. Gregory.” Then with a slight backhand wave, I walked out of the classroom and walked out into the hallways which were slightly chaotic.
All the seniors were celebrating, cheers and excited chatter making the hallway ten times louder than usual. The juniors and underclassmen were all trying to avoid being run over by the masses, and you could hear grumbling about how they still had at least another month until summer vacation.
Even as I stood at my locker, I could see friends gathering to talk about graduation, or college, or what they were going to do during their summer vacation. Some people were starting to get glassy eyes at the prospect of leaving behind the school they’ve attended for four years of their life, and leaving behind the town that most of us had lived in all our lives.
We were all becoming adults now, all responsibility on us to do well in college before getting a good job to support our soon-to-be families.
I’d be lying if I said it didn’t scare the hell out of me. I knew that I was ready, but I also didn’t want to be ready? I’m not sure that made sense, but that’s how I was feeling at this point.
I sighed, mentally reminding myself that I’m going to have to make the most of this one final summer.
Maybe I’ll spend it relaxing unlike past summers, where I attended extra courses over the summer to gain more knowledge.
Yeah, relaxing sounds nice. Especially after this hectic year.
I walked to the parking lot, the air still somewhat cool seeing as it was late May. I rolled up the sleeves to my light blue shirt, starting on my walk home.
After Lee and I had decided to take a little break, my parents completely flipped.
When I say my parents, I mean my mother did. She had always been a bit more controlling than my dad, but he never exactly tried to help me in any way either.
So she took away my car completely, and basically forbade me from seeing anybody, including friends, outside of school She started fretting about financials, even though my family was nowhere near poor. She just wanted more money, like the greedy person she was. She basically begged Lee to just forgive me, not able to understand that it was a mutual agreement between us, and now we were both legal adults. Which meant that we could make our own decisions.
