Tabloids told the story how Antonio had been discovered with a tub of cement connected to his feet. Wearing a pink negligee. Exposing him the way he planned to expose Luke and I. The story was quickly covered up by the mob, but not before Antonio's reputation had been thoroughly compromised. Marco and Tony joked about it for months. As for the two men with him, no one saw them again. Rumor had it that they were working in Chicago.
Tony had obtained a confession from Antonio through his usual merciless methods. He told Luke, Marco, and me about it when he returned from taking Antonio for his ride to the dock district. Tony didn't buy that Luke and I set Antonio up with the certificates, or if he did believe he thought it was a brilliant way to get rid of Antonio.
Antonio had begun to dislike how Luke ran things. Luke didn't care for his speakeasies, that were in basements and cellars and resembled the saloons before prohibition. It was Luke that made Antonio add jazz bands, hard liquor, and allow women into his speakeasies.
Luke doesn't care for drugs or prostitution. He formed a partnership with Marco so that he handled the prostitution end. Antonio was introducing drugs into his speakeasies, Luke put a stop to that. He didn't feel that people needed to mix drugs and alcohol. Last of all Luke had begun to take his efforts above ground. Instead of basements, Luke was putting speakeasies in warehouses, hotels, and houses. This increased the chance for raids, but it also increased the customer quality and the quality of the speakeasies themselves. My party boat proposal hadn't endeared Antonio to me either.
Antonio had planted the wagon at Wall Street knowing that Luke had an appointment at the JP Morgan Building. He had hoped to explode the wagon and kill Luke. Only Luke was late and wasn't close enough to the blast when the wagon exploded and blame the whole thing on communist anarchists.
Our picnic at the park had delayed Luke, making him late for his appointment. His second attempt was at the theater. Antonio had mistakenly thought that both Luke and I would be there. He had nearly succeeded in killing me. Antonio didn't know that Luke wasn't with me on the second attempt. Last of all was the bomb, always there were the letters blaming some radical group, and we began to put together what to do.
His final attempt would have been running us off the road after the funeral and having his four men killing us both with shotguns. That was before he met my Father. The rummy I thought was familiar. Father had recognized me. Only not as Allen, his son. When I said my name was Ellen he thought I meant my dead twin.
Antonio hadn't led the man away to keep him from disturbing the guests. Antonio had interrogated my Father and learned part of the truth.
In the meantime one of Antonio's men had suggested to Tony what his boss was planning. He told Marco, Marco told Luke.
That gave us time to plan the little trap. Neither Marco nor Tony had known what Antonio was really up to, only that it had involved the bum, and birth certificates. That was enough to alert us and allow us time to trap Antonio.
Antonio didn't know that my condition had altered me physically. He thought I was a transvestite with no feminine characteristics. A feminine looking male, but a male nonetheless. Not a gyneomorphic (transgender) individual. Had someone stuck their hand in my knickers the gig would have been up, but I doubt anyone would have thought to do that.
Things have slowed down. So has Luke's libido. I was worried he might be getting tired of me, but Luke assures me that is because I satisfy his animal lust on a regular basis, so his need is not as urgent as when we first started having sex. There are times when I still wonder what my life might have been like if I hadn't changed at puberty, but each day I realized that no matter what I lost through that change, I gained a wonderful life with Luke.
Writer's Notes:
My first story I noted that Ellen Cross had a XXXY 48 version of Klinefelter's syndrome, causing her to develop as she did in my story. The more X Chromosomes the greater the health problems.
I describe Ellen's poor motor coordination as clumsiness. That would have been the common opinion of someone who didn't associate the lack of motor skills as a symptom of her physical development. I describe her moving slowly, cautiously, in an almost graceful manner. This is due to my own depth perception problems that developed due to glaucoma. I learned to move slower, to be more cautious with my movements. Although I wouldn't call myself graceful.
After reading more about Disorders of Sexual Differentiation or DSDs, I changed my opinion and attribute Ellen's Sexual Difference to Aromatase Excess Syndrome. Not being a Doctor, I have no doubt I took liberties when I described the effects. Possibly making them more severe than they were.
I kept Ellen Cross' poor motor skills, as a possibly symptom of her condition, because it is woven to some degree into the story.
This story also has a major rewrite at the beginning of it. In which Ellen Cross' seduction by Luke is accomplished a few days after the JP Morgan Bombing, instead of directly after the event.
Finally, as with the original story, I used the term Negro frequently. It was the turn that was used to describe African Americans at the time. If it offends some people, I felt that it was necessary to use the terminology of the time period. Black was an insulting turn to some people of color back in the 1920s and really wasn't used until after Martin Luther King Jr. used it in one of his famous speeches. So that term does not appear in the story either.
Transgender would not have been part of the 1920s dialect. Transsexual might have been in use at that time, but I'm not sure. Gyneomorpheus is a word I dug out of my 1960 Edition Webster New Collegiate Dictionary. Meaning to have female form or the characteristics of. It sounded appropriate so I had Ellen describe herself as a gynomorphic male. I would later find out that Ellen would qualify as a pseudo hermaphrodite in the 1920s and I may begin using the term in later stories.
