Eventually, I finished my dinner and waited for a few minutes to see if Edger and Allen would show back up. They never did of course.
I paid for the food with the money Allen gave me and got two to-go boxes. One holding each of the boy's food.My head was hung low as I walked out of the Chinese restaurant while holding the boxes of food, and for a long time, I just walked around.
I noticed new things that had shown up while I was gone and even looked in a few stores.
There was a new video store that looked pretty cool, and somehow I ended up looking around at DVDs.I found some of my old favorites, ones that Allen had shown me when I was little. I ditched the boxes of food on a ledge outside so my arms were finally free to grasp at the cases to look at them.
" That's a good one." A voice said from behind me.
I quickly turned around and saw a middle-aged man smiling kindly at me. He wore a fancy set of glasses and a beautiful dog sat at his side. He waved, " Sorry If I scared you." He soon apologized.
I took a deep breath and waved it off, " Don't worry about it." I said, putting the movie back.
He chuckled, " I'm Max." He greeted, his dog barked and brought another grin onto his thin lips, " Sorry, and this is Thorn." He announced.
I laughed, " I'm Davina, and it's nice to meet you both." I said earnestly, lowering myself to pet the hound which cheerfully accepted. The white animal nuzzled his nose against my palm, causing me to laugh and become enthralled with the pet.
Max wrinkled his brows, seeming bewildered as to why Thorn was so excited for my affection.
I looked up and glowed, " Dogs love me." I confessed, watching as Thorn rolled over to give me admission to his
stomach. Max chuckled in amazement, " I-Its not that, just-- Thorn normally doesn't like people. He's like a lookout dog." Max stated.I nodded, " Well, he is pretty vicious." I commented as Thorn's tongue lolled out the side of his mouth, giving me a good laugh the more I rubbed. " Do a lot of people try and start trouble at the DVD shop?" I asked, committing to a conversation with the man.
Max shook his head, " This one group of boys frequently find themselves in here stirring up mischief. The worst part is that they're like my sons." He elucidated, leaning against one of the shelves nearby.
I snickered, " Yeah, boys always find a way to do something they shouldn't. The family especially because they know they can get away with it." I said, actually enjoying myself in this chat.
The man tilted his head, " Are you speaking from observation or experience?" He asked curiously, seeming to enjoy having someone to talk to.
I shrugged, " Both? My brothers are always getting into some form of trouble and a lot of my friends are guys who can't keep themselves out the cooler." I said, accidentally slipping into 'teen' talk.
