The rest of the ride was surprisingly calm, Marko simply riding his typical crazy drive across the beaches sand dunes.
Star was, of course, cheering as we arrived at the cave, eager to 'go home' as she put it.

The boys all stopped and parked, each of them chatting as we jumped in. Laddie was reading a comic book on his cot, having decided to stay home while everyone went to the boardwalk. Dwayne, of course, thought this was the perfect time to tease the boy he thought of as a son.

" Hey little man, any hot dates?" He asked, poking Laddies's rib.

Laddie just made a gagging sound and rolled over, continuing his 'interesting' read.

I laughed at the two and plopped down the couch, putting my legs over Marko's lap and my head on Stars' legs.

David went to his wheelchair and grinned, looking eager for something as he stared at Star and me.

Weirdo. I thought with a smile.

" Hey, Vina?" Paul asked as he began rolling a new blunt.

" Yeah, Paul?"

" Where did you learn to smoke?" He asked curiously, tilting his head as he smiled kindly.

I laughed and shrugged, " My friend Grace taught me. We used to smoke behind the auditorium from time to time." I put easily, stretching my arms out.

" and you never got caught?" He asked.

I shook my head, " Nah, I was too clever. I always left perfume on me when I went to smoke just in case a teacher walked in because they smelled the weed." I explained.

Paul leaned his head back as he finally inhaled, " Damn-*cough* my old man always caught me." He said with disdain.

I raised a brow, " I'm sensing daddy issues."

" Major. My dad was a priest and well, look at me." He said gesturing to his clothes with the blunt in his hand.

I nodded, " My dad couldn't give two shits about me. My mom neither." I admitted, gaining Marko's attention.

" Elaborate."

I looked at the cave ceiling, " My dad and I haven't spoken since I was six. I haven't even seen him since I've been home. He probably doesn't even know I'm here because he spends all of his days at the comic shop drinking his life away. One time he forgot my third birthday, only realizing his mistake when he came home and saw me sitting at the kitchen table waiting on him. He didn't even care." I said with a scoff at the end, " And don't get me started on my mom. She was the worst. She forgot my name and instead called me Lina, not Davina. But I don't care. I don't care about either of them. I got some pretty good brothers, and I got y'all." I said, nodding towards everyone.

Marko frowned, " Damn that's tough."

" The toughest," Paul added.

David bit the inside of his cheek as he looked at me as if he was deciding something of utmost importance.

In a moment's decision, he looked at Marko, " Get the bottle."

" What? David-"

" Get. The. Bottle." David said again.

Marko furrowed his brows and his eyes suddenly glossed over, as if he had been ghosted.

" David, what the fuck are you doing?" I asked in my head, staring straight at David when he ordered me to grab the bottle.

David stared back at me, " We need to help her. She'll be happier with us than she'll be with her brothers." He tried to reason.

" Yeah! She'll love it here, I mean you've all heard her thoughts about the cave! She loves it here!" Paul jumped in.

Dwayne walked over to a couch sat down before joining us, " This isn't some half-ass choice. This is literally life or death. She should know what she's getting into. She doesn't even know we're what we are." He said, being the voice of good reason.

Marko huffed, " See Dwayne gets it! I've been talking to Davina about this all night, dropping hints. Hell, I've been dropping hints ever since I met her!"  Marko exclaimed in his head, running his hand over Davina's leg prospectively as she talked absent-mindedly with Star.

David crossed his arms, " Are you saying you don't want her to live forever? To give her eternal youth?" He asked.

I shook my head, " Of course I want that! That's all I want but I have to consider that her brothers fucking vampire hunters and are very willing to kill any vampire that steps over their boundaries. I think turning their baby sister is well crossing one of those lines." I said.

Paul laughed, " So you're telling me that you're afraid of Edger and Alan?" He questioned.

I scoffed, " I couldn't give two shits about them. Sadly though they are my mates family and I don't want to spend our lives fussing over the fact that I killed the only real family she has." I said, leaning my head back in stress, " Just give me more time to ease her in. After she knows we'll ask her to join. It has to be her choice. Not mine, not yours, and not Max's. Her."

The boys all stared at me. Surprised about how mature I was being about this.

I rolled my eyes, " Paul pass it over." I said, taking the blunt from Paul's grasp. " This is gonna be a long night."
