He was shot.
I looked around looking to see where the bullet came from but I couldn't figure out where. Then the head guard walked around the cottage with a gun out.
"Jacob, Roy. Come help get the body." he yelled.
Two guards walked out of no where and picked up the other guards' body and started to carry him back to the truck.
"Remember, this is what happens when you abuse a female for no reason. He will be put in jail as soon as we get back to the castle."
The guards carried the man to the back of the truck and laid him down on a blanket. It looked like all of the guards were packed up and about to leave, when one came around back. He lit a match and threw it in the cottages back door. He ran back to the truck which then raced off.
The back porch had completely gone up in flames. I quickly climbed down the tree and ran to the front to see if I could get inside to stop the fire. I ran in the front door and into the kitchen grabbing a bucket and quickly filling it with water. I started dumping buckets on the fire to make it go out, but it was only saving time. The fire wasn't going to go out. I ran to my room and pulled out my black suitcase before throwing my assassin clothes and everyday clothes in the bag. I grabbed the emergency money out from under Master Jake's bed just to see that the fire was covering the whole back wall of the cottage. I hurriedly ran into the kitchen and scooped some water out of the over flowing sink to slow down the fire. That's when I saw the note Jake wrote me and it was turned over with new writing.
Dear Assassins,
We know you were watching us while we were searching the cottage. If this cottage does not burn down in flames, then we know even more that you were there and we will find you.
---yours truly the Royal Guard
They knew I was in the tree the whole time. It seemed a little off that they didn't further their search, they are normally more thorough than that. I just remembered the fire and realized I needed to grab my stuff and get out. I ran back to my room and grabbed my suitcase and the money bag. Then ran out the front door.
I started walking along the path the truck took, until I saw our usual path taken when we head through the village. I started walking on that path when I came across the open field that says your half way there. I sat down on the edge and pulled out my phone. I called Jake then to tell him.
"Selena, are you ok? What happened?" Jake asked frantically into the phone.
"Yes Jake, I'm fine, but the cottage isn't." I answered sheepishly.
"What do you mean?"
"The royal guard came and burned down the cottage after looking through it. I packed a bag of stuff I would need before I it burnt completely. I also got the money bag out from under your bed, so I have all of out savings."
"Ok, so they didn't know you were there?"
"Not exactly, they knew I was there, but didn't do anything. They just wanted to scare us so we wouldn't come back."
"I guess that's fine since you're ok. I will meet you in town tomorrow night at the Diner right after sunset so we can go to where we will temporarily be staying. Enjoy your day in town."
"Ok, see you tomorrow." I said before hanging up.
I started my walk to the other side of the clearing so I could find a tree to sleep in for the night. I'll get up tomorrow morning and head into town early for the parade. I hope this will help get my mind off of whats truly going on.
