During the ride over to the royal castle, we kept having people outside staring trying to figure out who was so special to be transported by car. We may be a wealthy country with a lot of intelligence, but that doesn't mean we all can afford it. Mainly only the royals and a few high lords of court have the luxury of a car.
No one spoke while we were riding, and I was fine with that. I was always taught 'you can act like you and your boss/enemy are friends, but you are never to get attached.' That was the case with all of my missions. Act like you like them, then kill them when they least expect it.
I had zoned out to where I didn't realize how much time had passed. Standing right before me was the royal castle. The one place assassins are known to be caught and tortured to death.
I looked to my side to look at Jake, to see that he was thinking the same thing. We had never heard of an assassin making it out alive before to tell their story.
We both turned our heads back to the neutral position so it didn't look suspicious. All these guard moves are easy for us to replicate because we have literally studied them for hours on end so if we ever got put in a situation similar to this one, we wouldn't need training. Thankfully I actually did pay attention enough to know that if we needed to escape, we could go out the back gate between 8:00 and 8:15 because the castle guards leave a bit too early.
We had finally pulled up to the gates and the royal guards were coming to make sure no one who wasn't suppose to be here was in the car. They opened the back door leading into where we were.
"Hello Prince Maxon. These are your two royal guards correct?"
Wait, he could turn us in right here, right now. I grabbed for my knife in my pocket just in case because if I was going down. He was going down with me.
"Yes, these are my two top royal guards." he said.
Phew.
"Ok, well we need to do an inspection to make sure they're not carrying any lethal weapons."
"No, no inspection needs to be done. Of course they are carrying weapons. They are here to protect me in case there are any more attacks, so your guard isn't short on any other section of duty."
"Let me check with the King real quickly." the guard says turning around.
"You're disobeying your future King right now. How do you think that will turn out for you?" Maxon said using a voice full of high authority.
"Guards, open the gates and let them through." he yelled. "I hope you have a nice day." he said looking at Prince Maxon before closing the door.
I let my grip on the knife loosen, but I didn't completely let go of it. You never knew what could be up someone's sleeve, especially when you're pretty much in enemy territory.
"You can let go of the knife now. Nothing is going to happen, I promise."
"Why should I take your word?"
"Because I am the only thing keeping you from getting taken."
He had a good point there, so I dropped the knife back into its pocket.
"Now that's better. I will probably talk to Princess Isabelle today, so we can get to know each other better. I would like Selena to come with me as my personal guard for the night. All the other guards will be allowed to settle into where they are staying tonight. That includes you Jake. After the Princess and I hang out together tonight, we will talk about our plan further."
"Yes Prince Maxon." we both said in unison knowing that anyone could be listening into us at this moment.
We had stopped at the front gates of the castle, and we waited for a servant to some open the door. The door opened a few seconds later to a young lady who looked to be in her early twenties. I stepped out and stayed on the right side of the door while Jake got out and stood on the left.
I could see the surprise in the girls eyes when I stepped out of the car. It was very unusual to see a girl as guard, let alone the Captain of the operation I forgot to say that I had a different uniform and it said Captain on the right breast.
Prince Maxon then steps out of the limo and looks up at the castle taking in the view.
"Hello Prince Maxon. I was asked by the King to show you to your room." she said bowing low. "The other servants will get your bags and take them to your room, which is right this way." she finished, walking toward the castle.
We followed closely behind as he was shown to his room. The castle was like a maze of rooms and hallways that just seemed to go on forever. I kept checking my surroundings trying to take in which ways should lead to which rooms, and how many ways there are to the front entrance.
We were walking for a good five minutes when we came up on two double doors.
"This is your room Prince Maxon, and the the doors down the hall on the same side are for all your guards. Do you need another room for your Captain?" she asked looking back at me.
"No, this will do. If we have any problems I will talk to the King about it."
"I see."
"Is Princess Isabelle schedule free tonight?"
"Oh yes. She made sure to free up her days when you arrived so you can visit her. She should of just gotten out of her studies. Would you like to settle in and then me show you to her?"
"Yes please. Could you be back in half an hour so I can visit her?"
"Absolutely, I'll be back then." she said quickly walking down the hall in the other direction.
--Princess Isabelle-
I had just gotten out of my studies and laid down in bed from the long day. I am so tired; I cannot wait to go to bed.
Right when I was about to dose off their was a knock on my door.
Ugh.
"Come in!" I called sitting up.
"Princess Isabelle, you do not lay down in that dress. You could ruin it!" her maid said rushing in.
"I'm just so tired though. Studies just drain me of my energy." I said standing up.
She came up to me checking the dress to see if there are any wrinkles.
"Ugh, there's a huge wrinkle in the back. We are going to have to change your whole outfit now before you can meet the Prince."
"Wait, the Prince is here?" I asked all of a sudden nervous.
"Yes, he is here. He can't wait to see you either. He asked for you personally." Lady Rosa, my maid said.
"Lady Rosa, you are one of the few that know how I feel about this marriage. It is to a man that I have never met before. Let alone someone I will probably love. Knowing him, he is going to be as stuck up as the rest of them."
"Isabelle, there is nothing you or I can do. This was your father's decision and he is in charge. Let's just get you into another dress before it's time for the Prince to meet up with you."
"Ok."
Lady Rosa looked through her closet for a few minutes, until she found a pink dress that Princess Isabelle loves to wear to events.
"Way don't you wear this one tonight?"
"I guess."
I quickly put the dress on looking in the mirror. I really just want a day off to be lazy and do whatever I want.
"Come on Princess. Turn that frown upside down. We have to head down to the lounge room in a minute, and we don't need that sour mood going with us."
I put a smile on my face turning around in a swirl of ruffling dress.
"Now that's better. Let's head down to the lounge room, so we are there before him."
"Ok. I hope he's a little different than the other men."
"All you can do is hope." Lady Rosa said walking out of my room with me following her.
Time to get this over with. My first time meeting Prince Maxon, which came sooner than I had hoped.
