Walk Away

Hazel's eyes open revealing milky yellow orbs instead of the usual chocolate brown. I watched in horror as her skin began to rot before me and her body convulsed as she let out a low growl.
Her small hand reached towards me. I gasped and scrambled to my feet when she sat up and stood and slowly limped towards me.
I cried out as she lunged at me and fell. Before she could rise again, I brought up my gun and hovered my finger over the trigger. My eyes squeezed shut and I felt tears trickling down my cheeks.
"Hazel. Hazel it's California. You're my sister, Hazel. You are still there. I know you are. Please. P-please." I whispered.
Her response was a snarl. I let out another cry as I tightened my hand around the gun and pulled the trigger.

My 7 year old sister's body went completely limp with a thud.
I fell to my knees sobbing. I buried my face in my hands as I rocked back and forth.
"Hazel," I said. "I am so sorry. I love you. So much. I love you." I sniffled.

Minutes before, we were walking along the road when a walker lunged out from a nearby bush. I shot it, but the loud noise caught the attention of more beasts. They targeted Hazel. She had ran and screamed until one walker- a woman- took a large chunk of skin from her neck. Hazel fell to the ground screaming as more monsters bent down to attack her.
I had promised Mom that I would protect her. It was her dying wish. I still remember her hands cupping my face as she whispered comfort into my ear. Then she went unconscious and I ran with my sister. We ran until we couldn't walk any more. That was two years ago and we were both still alive. But she met the same fate as my mother. I was alone.
I turned away from her corpse and wiped a tear away. I was strong. You had to be, to live in this world. My feet carried me far away from her. My only family.
I continued to walk along the road for hours, only having to kill a few walkers every now and then. I decided to venture into the woods for shelter; it was getting dark out.
I stumbled along through the trees for a long time looking for any cave or abandoned building. I found a clear spot in the brush and sat down. But through the bushes I could see a large building. I stood up and began to walk towards in curiously.
Rustling. Behind me. I spun around to be faced by a large crowd of walkers. My eyes widened.
I began to run towards the shelter. I finally came to the outskirts.
It was a prison. Tall fences towered above me and on the other side it seemed like a small community. Pig and horse pens sat in the middle of the field within the gates next to rows of small plants. I needed to get in, but there was no way.
The growls behind me grew dangerously close. I did the only thing I could think of.
I jumped onto the wall of the fense and began to climb.
