CARL'S POV
California Teal is sitting on my bed.
Oh. My. God.
Cali was my crush in elementary school. And she is sitting. On. My. Bed.
I can't help but stare at her when she does her cute little things. The way she tucks her hair behind her ear, how she gives a little shy side smile when you compliment her, or when her nose wrinkles up when she laughs. She's just so cute. And pretty. And hot. And beautiful.
It's not fair.
She probably barely even remembers me, though. When she moved away in first grade, I was heart broken.
Now she sat on my bunk bed with her head resting on my pillow and her twisted ankle (Hershal wrapped it up) propped up.
"So." I said awkwardly.
She smiled. I coughed nervously.
"Uh. Er... so what was the deal with you climbing the fence?" I asked.
"Oh. Well, I was looking for shelter in the woods, cause, you know, it was getting dark. And I saw the prison. But then, a herd started chasing me and I just climbed up and hung on for dear life." She laughed. But the smile faded from her face and was replaced with a frown.
"I almost let go." Her eyes became distant and her expression became serious. "I just wanted to... to end it all. I mean, I didn't really think there was much to live for, now that the world's gone to hell. But I was just about to fall and let them take me. Then I wouldn't have to put up with it any more. I- I could be with my family. I wouldn't be alone." A tear rolled down her cheek and she looked away. "Never mind." She sniffled.
"Hey." I put my hand on her's. "It's okay. Come here."
I opened my arms and she fell into me, clutching my chest as she quietly cried into my shirt.
"Hey... Hey, it's alright. You're safe now. Sh." I said soothingly. "You don't have to be alone, now... I'm here. I'm here. It's okay." I know I haven't seen her since 1st grade, but I feel like we were already best friends again.
We sat like that for a long time. After a while, she finally grew quite and rested her head on my shoulder.
"You saved my life." She said.
"No, it's really nothing."
"But it is." She sat up to look at me. "It was everything for me. Thank you."
All of a sudden, she kissed me on the cheek. "I'm gonna go change." She said as she stood up and limped out of my cell.
I sighed and fell onto my bed, burying my face into my pillow. I could feel myself smiling like crazy.CALIFORNIA'S POV
"California? Why are you so smily?" Rick eyed me suspiciously as I walked to the bathroom with a fresh pair of clothes.
"Nothing." I blushed.
As I closed the door to the bathroom, I did a mini victory dance.
