CARL'S POV
I lightly walked past Cali's cell, taking a brief moment to peak inside. She was sound asleep.
I reached the exit, and, tightly gripping the garden shears in my hand, I swung it open to find a fresh, cold burst of nighttime air.
My tennis shoes quietly slammed against the ground as I made my way to the fence where a only few walkers were on the other side, attempting to get in. At the sight of me, they snarled and clawed at the fence harder.
I spotted the walker I had seen at this part of the fence earlier today. A blonde woman, missing an arm. She clenched and unclenched her jaws, biting at the air.My gaze lead down to the tiny golden heart locket dangling near her collar bones, still good as new. It's perfect.
Taking a deep breath, I lunged at her neck with the garden clippers through the fence. I was careful to not put any fingers through the fence holes.
I poked and prodded at her chest, accidentally stabbing her slightly in the process. A small amount of blood poured from her mild wound, splashing the locket with a few drops of dark red.
I finally got my grip on the chain of the necklace with the clippers, then, snapping it and removing it from her bloody neck, I brought it through the fence and finally it was resting in my hand.
I slightly smiled at my accomplishment. Then I walked back to the building, fingering the piece of jewelry in my hand.
Once I got back inside, I scrubbed in with water and soap, knowing that it was pure gold so it wouldn't tarnish it.
I tiptoed back to my cell and closed the door. I dug out a reading light in my drawer and turned it on, hovering it over the heart locket.
It was beautiful. California would be thrilled. She probably hasn't celebrated her birthday ever since this whole thing started.
I opened the locket, it squeaking slightly as I did. I would have to fix that.
The inside was a tiny picture of a couple, smiling like crazy and holding each other in their arms. The way they looked at one another, you could tell they were madly in love.
That woman that I got the necklace from was in the picture, lovingly staring at her other half. It was so strange to see the real person they were before. Before they became a monster.
I carefully removed the photo, placing on my dresser, and I searched the trunk under my bed for something else.
I pulled out a normal sized picture that Glenn and Maggie had taken of us from the guard tower. Cali and I's figures were seen in the distance, standing in the field, hugging. I couldn't fit the whole picture, of course, but I got out a pair of scissors and cut a small heart-shape around us hugging. I removed it and, using tweezers, I glued it down with some glue I had found in the living space to secure the photo inside the locket. It dried quickly.
I put it in a shoebox under my bed for storage, and hid it behind my other junk I had under there.
Once it was stored away safely, I removed my shoes and slipped into bed, thinking about how much California would like it as a birthday present.
I finally drifted into a deep sleep.//••••••••••••••••••
