when nini stepped in her front door, her moms were waiting in the living room. nini immediately lost the smile that was plastered on her face after leaving ricky. her moms looked concerned.
"nini, sweetheart, please come sit down." ninis mom said. ninis heart dropped to the bottom of her stomach. she was nervous and scared. nini was never the kid to get in trouble, and she was absolutely terrified what would happen if she did.
"i'm so sorry. i know i should have called or at least texted, but i lost track of time and i know it was irresponsible and i promise it will never happen-" nini started to ramble on an apology, but her other mother cut her off.
"nini, this isn't about the party, this is about something important." she said as nini sat down in the chair across from them.
"nini." her mom took a deep sigh. "you know that we love you more than anything, and nothing could ever change that. you are growing up now, and you deserve to be in these conversations."
"of corse i know you love me. i love you guys too, but your scaring me. is everything okay?" nini said, extending in hand to each of her mothers and setting it on their hands.
"nini, it's about your birth family. your biological father is trying to reach out. ninis heart dropped.
"what?"
nini knew that she was adopted, but she didn't remember ever not being with her moms. they fostered her since she was a toddler, and officially adopted her the year before she started kindergarten. she didn't know a whole lot about her biological family, and she never really had the urge to. in 6th grade, she had to do a family tree, and she remembered that hers looked different from everyone else's. she knew that it wasn't as common to have 2 parents of the same gender, but she loved having two moms.
she remembered the first time someone made a comment about it. "so who's your actual parents? two girls can't have a kid." tommy edwards words echoed through her head for the rest of the day after 3rd period. when she got home, she asked her moms about where she came from. nini knows that her biological dads name is Eric and her biological mother is Amelia. nini was born a Nina in New York. after 2 months, she was give up and put into foster care. but her moms were her real family.
"nini? nini? sweetheart?" her moms were calling her out of her zoning out.
"why now? he has had 17 years. why now?" nini said, trying to stay calm.
"before we move on, you should know that your biological father was an addict. prescription pills and alcohol. it's part of the reason why we want you to be so careful about experimentation and drinking. you have an addictive gene. anyways, he is claiming to be clean now. we think that is why he chose now to get in contact. " her mom reached behind a pillow and pulled out a white envelope with the letters "N-I-N-A" written across the front in black pen.
"sweetheart, it is 100% your decision to read this or not. we will be beside you the whole way. if you want to pursue where you came from, then we totally can, and we will support that decision. if not, we will be there either way, honey." her mom said.
nini held the letter in her hands. she could be holding the one piece of paper that flips her entire life upside down.
"you don't have to decided right now. we are going to let you think. goodnight, baby" her other mom said as they both got up to go to their room. nini quickly pulled them both in to a tight hug.
"thank you. for telling me. i love you." she said, and went up the stairs to her room. she slipped out of her clothes and into some pajamas. she couldn't stop thinking about the letter and what it could possibly say. as she got into bed, turned off her lights, pulled in her phone, abe looked at the clock that read '12:52am' she still couldn't get the thought of the letter out of her head.
nini tosses and turned for the next hour or so. she couldn't do this. she needed to talk to someone about it. tell them how angry she is, how excited she is, how terrified she is. she grabbed her phone from her nightstand and opened it up.
