[10] what almost happened

nini pulled into rickys driveway right behind him. they got out of their cars and went inside.
"i'll grab us some drinks and we can go up to my room till we leave for king EJs party." ricky said in a mocking tone, walking into the kitchen with an over dramatic eye roll.

"do you have to be so dramatic? why don't you like him anyways?" nini asked, picking up an apple lying in the fruit basket.

"i don't not like the guy, i'm just not frolicking around thinking he's on some higher plane." he said, sliding nini a bottle of lemonade. nini smiles, ricky knew that it was her favorite.

" 'frolicking' ? really? i mean he doesn't seem so bad to me." she said with a small smile, looking down at her hands. she was scared that rickys eyes would disapprove of her opinion.

"so what, do you like, have a thing for EJ Caswell?" ricky said with a small laugh, but his eyes hung with more concern than humor. he looked into her eyes. for some reason that ricky couldn't understand, all he wanted was for nini to burst our laughing at his ridiculous comment telling him how foolish he sounds. but that wasn't exactly what was happening.

nini looked up at rickys eyes.

"i don't know. i mean, it's not like there is anybody else in the running. there's no reason for me to not like him, right?" nini said, with a playful smile that she couldn't manage to keep on her face.

"maybe he would tell me i was wrong." she couldn't help herself from thinking it. "why would i want to be wrong? EJ is perfect right? why would ricky not want me to be with him? why do i want ricky to care about it?" the questions ran through her head as ricky stood there, just looking into her eyes.

"right." ricky said quickly as he turned to walk towards the stairs. "so when should we leave?" he said as he made his way to his room.

nini sat there for a minute wishing the conversation hadn't been brought up. nini snapped herself out of it and followed him up the stairs.

"well it starts at 8 but i'm sure it goes till some crazy hour of the night. so we can leave at 8 since it's not too long of a drive. so about 30 minutes? i don't know, is fashionably late still a thing?" nini said, slightly babbling.

ricky chuckled, "whatever you want princess." they got to rickys room and ricky sat down at the bottom right coroner and nini sat at the top right on the pillows where they were facing eachother.

"so. have you thought anymore about the letter from your dad?" ricky said, looking up at nini. he tried to be as nonchalant as possible, but nini could see that he was concerned.

"um, no, actually. well, yes. i mean, it's all i've been thinking about, but i haven't made a decision." nini said looking down at her hands that were fidgeting in her lap. ricky could see that she was slightly biting her lower lip. she always did that when she was nervous.

nini let out a small sigh, "i just don't want to make the wrong choice. this could turn my entire life upside down. i just don't want to hurt my moms, you know?" nini said looking up to meet rickys eyes.

he got up and walked around to the other side of the bed. he stood in front of nini as she sat on the edge of the bed. he placed his hands on either sides of her cheeks and tilted up her face so that she was looking into his eyes.

"nini, this is your decision. make this for you. not for your father, or your moms, or anyone else. it's your life, and this is your choice to make. and whatever you choose, it will be the right one. i promise i will stand beside you through it all."

his hands were warm against her face. nini caught herself looking between his eyes and his slightly parted lips. she realized how close their bodies were. neither of them said anything, they just sat and stood there looking at eachother.

ricky couldn't stop his eyes from making their way from ninis beautiful brown eyes to her lips that were resting in the space between his hands on the sides of her face. the tension grew as they stood in silence looking at eachother.

"RICKY! IM HOME! WHOS CAR IS OUT IN THE DRIVEWAY?" rickys dad boomed from down stairs.

both nini and ricky jumped a little. rickys hands dropped from her face and nini got up to make her way downstairs to greet Mr. Bowen. when nini left the room, ricky was left there standing alone.

"you idiot." ricky said under his breath about himself as he shook his head. ricky followed nini down the stairs to see his dad. he was hugging nini and they were having small talk. nini always got along with both of rickys parents. they love her! everyone does.

"hey dad! yeah, nini and i were just about to head out. a, um, friend is having a bonfire at his lake house this evening." ricky said.

"that sounds fine. you kids have fun, but not too much fun." he said with a wink. both nini and ricky laughed and headed up to rickys room to grab their stuff.

"you can take my car if you want. just so we can ride together. plus i have no clue how muddy it is and my car rides higher." ricky said grabbing his keys and phone, totally ignoring the moment they had earlier.

"sounds good to me!" nini replies as she grabbed her bag and phone. they walked out to the car and started off to the location that EJ had sent out.

nini didn't exactly know what happened between her and ricky earlier, all that she knows is that her feelings are a lot more complicated than she thought.
