[12] walking through the war path

nini tried as hard as she could to open her eyes, and as they fluttered open, the world around her has crumbled down. the sound of cries and screams ran out, and all she could smell was the overwhelming stench of fire. she saw the stars, "god, through everything down here, they are always so beautiful." she though, and she almost let her eyes close again and drift off to sleep. she felt so tired, and she didn't know why.

ninis eyes shot open. "the party. the truck." nini felt damp mud and grass on her back, she had been thrown down onto the ground. she wiggled her fingers and toes, praying they would move. they did. she turned her head to both sides, and even though it was sore, she was able to do everything and nothing was painful. "thank god." she thought. her moms told her if she was ever in an accident, to do that to see if she has a severe spinal injury.

nini went to get up, but something was stopping her. she looked down to see a log was on her left leg. she moved her hands down to try and lift it off, but she couldn't hold it up long enough. "hey guys, can someone help me get this-" nini started, but then she looked to the others, it at least where she remembered they were. then it hit her.

she saw the path of destruction the truck had made. people were crying and screaming in pain. she could tell there was a fire at the other side of the lot, probably where the truck had finally stopped it's trail of destruction. some people were up, but nini could see they were all in shock. the more she thought about it, she probably was too.

"where's my friends? ricky-" nini couldn't stop murmuring. then another kick of reality set in. nini looked around her frantically, but she couldn't see ricky. he was right there before the crash. she turned her head from side to side, but she still couldn't find him. she had to get out from under the log.

nini grabbed another log that was laying beside her and set it under the one on her leg. she pushed all her weight to one side of the smaller log and used it as a prop to lift the bigger one up. once it was up just above her leg, she pulled it out from underneath her. now nini was sitting on her bottom, looking at the destruction.

nini saw someone she recognized, a girl named rylie that went to a school in the next town over. she was laying in her side, facing away from nini. nini got to her feet, as much as if hurt, and started limping over to her. "rylie, come on. we are gonna get to safety." nini said as she turned one of rylies shoulder over so she would be lying on her back. "rylie, come-" nini started and gasped. rylies eyes were wide open, but she was covered in blood. there was a giant stick going right through her abdomen.

"oh my god." nini bent down and placed two fingers on rylies bloody neck. no pulse. nini has never seen a dead person in real life before, especially not so brutal. "i'm so sorry, i wish i could have helped you." nini said, before gently closing rylies eye lids. nini looked around, there seemed to be more bodies lying on the floor than earlier. close enough to see some of them, but she had no clue how spread out the bodies were.

the next wave of reality sunk in. nini was running on a clock. as much as she wanted to help everyone, she needed to find ricky before it was too late.

nini started limping over to where ricky last was, the fire pit. "UGH!" nini has to stop before she got there. she looked down at her leg that was now extremely painful. there was blood. a lot of it. nini placed her hands on her leg to find where it was bleeding. a deep gash was across her left thigh. nini knee she needed to slow the bleeding. she looked around and saw a flannel laying over a tree branch. she grabbed it and wrapped it wound her thigh twice before tying it off pretty tight.

she started walking again and got to the fire pit. she realized how far she had been thrown when the truck hit them. "wait- that doesn't make sense. if the truck hit me directly, i wouldn't still be alive?" nini thought. she shook her head dismissing the thought for now. her priority was to find ricky. she looked at where he last was. nothing.

"ricky? RICKY?" she called out, looking in all directions, but no response. nini started rambling to herself, "no. he has to be alive. god i'm the reason he's here. i shouldn't have brought him to this stupid party. oh my god, if he's dead it's all my fault-" she stopped. peaking out from the other side of a huge knocked down limb was rickys red converse.

"ricky!" nini called out as she limped over to the fallen limb. "ricky!" she got around to the other side to find ricky laying in the ground. his eyes were closed and he was laying still. too still.
