ricky was running around his room as quietly as possible. after he got the texts from nini, he got out of bed as quick as he could and threw on a black sweatshirt that was laying on his floor, since he was just sleeping in a pair of grey sweatpants. he slipped on his vans and grabbed his phone. he slowly made his way down the stairs. he could see through a crack in his dads door that he was out cold. ricky slipped out the side door, since it made less noise.
once ricky made it outside, he started running. it was about 5 minutes for nini to get to the dream bridge from her house, but it was around 7 for ricky. he cut through his backyard and once he got to the tree line, he started to slow down into a quick walk.
"what could it be about?" he thought. a small fire started in him when the thought of it being about EJ Caswell reaches his mind. ricky shook his head and tried to just get to nini.
when they were kids, the dream brodge was the best place in the entire world. the summer when they were 10, they went there every single day. ricky thought back and tried to remember the last time they went to the dream bridge, before their... falling out.
before he could remember, he saw nini standing at the bridge. it was a full moon tonight, making it bright. she stood on the old, wooden bridge. the moonlight shined down on her long, flowing hair that was moving slightly in the wind. she was looking into the water, and the moonlight reflected back into her face. it shined perfectly around all of her features.
ricky slowed his pace and walked up on the other side of the bridge. he stood beside her and when she didn't make eye contact, he looked into the water with her.
"hi." ricky said calmly. nini took a deep breath in, he could hear it. it sounded painful. ricky turned to her, not being able to look away from her.
"my um... my bio-dad is... he um... he's trying to get back in contact with me. and i-uh i don't really know what-what to do." ninis chin quivered and her eyes began to fill with tears involuntarily. ricky could feel her heart breaking. when they were little, nini used to ask what it was like having a dad. when they got older, ricky knew that as happy as nini was with her family, she had questions that she knew would never get answered.
but maybe things are changing. maybe she can finally get answers to the questions that she has always had. or maybe he's just going to leave her again.
"oh nini." ricky said, extending his arms as she fell into his chest. nini and ricky always had a connection where they could communicate perfectly without speaking. his arms wrapped around her torso, holding her near and tight, but also with a delicacy. she rested her head on his chest, with her hands holding her crying eyes. for a moment, ricky just held her as she cried.
when she took one big last sniff, she slowly pulled away and slumped down fo the ground. ricky followed her and they leaned against the guard rail. nini pulled the slightly crumpled white envelope out of her hoodie pocket.
"he wrote me a letter. and i don't know what to do. i want to throw it away and act like nothing ever happened. but i also want to read it and find out the things i have always wondered. like who do i look like? where did i get my musical gene? why do i suck at chemistry? so many questions that i have just had to shrug my shoulders at my entire life. ricky- i just- i don't know what to do. and i needed to talk to someone that wasn't going to hate me for the decision that i make.
ricky turned to nini and rested both of his hands on her cheeks, turning her face towards his.
"nini, nobody is going to hate you. nina salazar-roberts, i think it is actually physically impossible for anyone to hate you. your moms love you so much. whatever you choose, we are going to be beside you through all of it. i know i kind of shut you out when my family was going through some stuff, but i want you to know that i'm not going anywhere. i'm here for you nini."
nini nodded, and there was a moment of perfect agreement, understanding, and communication. she rested her head back onto his shoulder and watched the flowing river.
in this moment, everything was good. excusing everything outside of them on the dream bridge, everything was perfect. nini and ricky had a perfect moment, and nini didn't want to trade it for the world.
