[13] i wont leave you

"oh my god, ricky!" nini said as she fell the her knees, looking at ricky on the ground. a huge part of a tree had fallen on ricky. he was laying face up and the tree limb was lying over his hips. nini froze. all she could do was look at him. it was dark, and there wasn't much light around.

there were gashes, scratches, and bruises all over his body. nini know that she was still in shock, and they were probably all over her too.

rickys eyes were shut and he was laying so still. nini took a few deep breaths and set her index finger and middle finger on the side of rickys neck.

a pulse. she let out a sigh of relief.

"ricky? ricky come on, i need you to wake up. come on ricky! i cant lose you! wake up!" nini said as she got close to ricky. she wanted to shake him, but she knew that could hurt him more.

slowly, his eyes started to open and he let out a small groan.

"what's... what happened?" he said, trying to move.

"there was an accident. a truck plowed through here. a tree limb fell on you, can you move your toes?" nini asked, peeking over the large tree limb across rickys waist.

"god, please tell me they are moving." he said, trying to look down, but couldn't. nini saw the tips of his red converse start to move.

"okay! okay." she thought. she had always imagined what would happen if she was in some kind of freak accident, but now that it was actually happening, nini was a mess.

"okay, i'm going to get you out, okay?" nini said, bringing a hand to rickys face and lightly caressing his cheek. ricky could see right through ninis calm demeanor. he could tell she was absolutely terrified.

nini got up and walked over to the end of the tree limb.

"when i lift it up, move out from underneath it, okay?" she instructed as she got a firm grip on the limb. ricky nodded, and got his arms ready to pull himself out from underneath.

nini used all of her strength, but could only lift it about 2 inches over ricky. as soon as it left contact with his hips, he screamed out in pain. nini set the limb down as carefully as she could, but obviously not gentle enough, causing ricky to scream again.

"i'm sorry, i cant lift it up enough!" nini said, starting to go into panicking-mode. she went back around beside rickys face.

"hey, it's okay. i'll be okay." ricky said, then he started to turn his head to both sides, looking around at the chaos.

"i need you to look at my hips and see if it's bleeding, okay?" ricky said. nini nodded and bent her face down to the ground.

"there's... there's a lot of blood, but i don't see any flowing." she said, resuming her spot beside rickys face.

"actually, that's good. that means the pressure of the limb is controlling the bleeding. now nini, i need you to go get help. call 911." ricky said, taking ninis hand in his.

"what, no! i'm not leaving you like this! plus, i don't even know where my phone is!" she said, squeezing his hand.

"nini, a lot of people are hurt. we need professionals. you can't do anything for me sitting here. people need help." he said, slowly nodding his head.

"ricky, you don't understand, i don't know if there are..." nini said, her voice shaking. "it's really bad ricky. there's fire where the truck finally stopped at, and there is so much debris. ricky when i was going to find you, i saw so many dead bodies, bodies of kids! i tried to help one girl, but ricky she died. i looked it i the eyes of a girls dead body, she could have easily been me and i cant have you do that too." nini said, not her hands were shaking in rickys.

"hey, i need you to be brave, okay? there could still be people like us who just need help. so i need you to call 911. there is a pay phone in the parking lot. are you okay to walk?" he asked and nini nodded her head yes in response.

"okay, okay. i'll be back, i promise. just try and stay still." nini said, getting up and starting to run to the parking lot. her leg was in more pain than ever now, so her run quickly turned into a fast paced walk with a drastic limp.

after what seemed to be an eternity, she could see the parking lot. but there were already blue and red lights approaching. as she got to the parking lot, the first cop car pulled up. a woman about ninis mothers' age stepped out of the car.

"HELP! please help!" nini screamed. the cop ran to nini and looped an arm around her waist to help her over to the cop car.

"are you okay? what happened?" the cop asked. nini leaned her weight on to the hood of the car.

"we were just talking, the. all of the sudden this truck came out of nowhere... it wouldn't stop... and then i tried to help that girl, but she had already died..." nini said, as everything that happend started to sink in.

"who died? how many people are hurt?" the woman asked, taking ninis hand in hers.

"so many... there were maybe a little over 100 people here... and i saw so many bodies. ricky told me to call the police, but you were already here- oh god. ricky! we have to go back!" nini said as she started to get back up to go back into the woods.

"no! you are staying here. my team will get them!" the cop ordered, restraining nini in a gentle way. "you are hurt! these people are going to help you." she said.

nini noticed that half a dozen more cop cars and ambulances were now in the parking lot.

"no! i have to help ricky! a big tree limb fell on him! he can't move! he needs my help! i couldn't lift it, i told him i would get help!" nini said, starting to cry.

"and you got help. my people are going out there now. i promise they will get to him. if you couldn't lift it, you wouldn't be any help in there anyways. now this woman is going to take care of you." the cop said, gesturing at a woman who approached nini. she was wearing a windbreaker with the initials 'EMT' across the front.

"officer! he's wearing red converse!" nini yelled, starting to feel light headed. the officer nodded, and headed into the woods with a dozen other cops.

as the EMT tended to nini, she took a minute to observe everything around her. it all started to become clear. there was fire on one side of the wooded area. cries and screams rang out through the air. nini started to look for people. so far, only three other kids had come out.

nini saw so many people lying on the ground, perfectly still. "maybe they just need help. the officers will help them. they will be okay." she tried telling herself, but she knew better.

nini looked down at her body. there was a giant gash in ninis thigh from earlier. besides the raging pain that shot up through her body, nini could almost forget about it. she was covered in dirt and blood. some of it was hers, some was rickys, some was the poor girl that nini had tried to save.

before she knew it, she was being loaded into an ambulance. everything started getting blurry and nini felt like she was falling over. the EMT put an oxygen mask on nini.

"i promised... i promised him i would come back for him..." nini managed to say, then everything went black.
