Out of all the seasons of the year, fall and winter was by far my favorite. I was never the one to enjoy the heat nor sweat, there was something about body perspiration that disgusted me. The heat weighed me down and suffocated me. Whereas in cool weather, I felt almost weightless.
It was magical.
Yet lonesome.
The holidays make it lonesome, especially when you come from a broken family. You see everyone enjoying their holidays— showered in love and gifts. I spent it alone in my room crying, praying for better days.
It didn't get any better as time passed but I found little rays of hope here and there. Once, when my brother, Jungkook, gifted me a snake. At first I was confused and petrified by it. I literally thought he wanted to kill me. But I soon grew to love it.
He then set it free.
I think it was something about him finding amusement in taking away something that matters to me. He thought it was a power move but I thought it was heartless. I spent days and then weeks trying to find it thinking it'd gone missing in the estate only to find out that Jungkook cooked it and fed it to our house dog.
Second, when my father promised to take me on annual father-daughter trips. Our relationship was estranged enough as is but he made strenuous attempts to fix it. It worked out in the beginning and I might've even enjoyed it.
But he soon forgot about it.
Work was important, his sons were important. Everything going on in his life weighed heavier than the little excursions he took every year to mend our relationship.
The holidays were the worst for me.
My phone rings, disturbing me from my thoughts and the serene view. "Hello," I answer.
I gaze over the balcony and then past the field of trees. The sun had just begun to rise and I'd woken up to catch it just in time. It was a tradition of mine to do this at least once a week during the colder seasons.
"I took care of it," Jongho says. "She won't be a problem."
He was one of the few I could ever rely on. Unlike the twins who I've just came to trust, I couldn't ask this of them without expecting any questions. Especially not without Seonghwa finding out. "Thanks," I say. "I owe you one."
Obviously I couldn't just hire anyone to take care of that girl for me, it had to be Jongho and only Jongho. He was the least suspicious person I could come in contact with— anyone else was too risky. I'm most certain that Yunho checks my call and text history every other week. Recently, I found photos of me going to the mall last weekend just sitting on top of his desk.
They're on my ass.
"It's no big deal, I'll update you again later on."
"You planning to come visit anytime soon?" I ask. To be frank, I've missed my best friend more than I could ever let on. But I wasn't exactly the best at showing my emotions since affection was hardly present in my life. Jongho understood that.
I at least wanted some sort of familiarity in my life now that my Teddy is forever gone.
There's a long silence on the other end of the line before he finally replies. "Yeah sorry about that, my mom wanted me to sign off on some papers. And yeah, I'll be there for your wedding- duh."
"The wedding," I almost forgot I was getting married in a few months. "Yeah, okay. I'll see you soon then."
"Alright, bye."
The door slides open just as I end the call. I turn around to find Seonghwa topless, a blanket wrapped around him and his pajama pants. His hair is messily ruffled in all directions and his pretty face is scrunched up as he takes in the rising sun.
