Flashback
A warm breeze whisks through the open window and meets me where I sit. The papers on my desk are blown to dance in the air, and I reach up to grab them. I manage to only grab two papers, and the remaining three fall to the ground. Just then, the bell rings and instantaneously students get up.
Desks screech and chairs are pushed back. Footsteps pad with quick pace to get out. I crouch down, for my papers laying under the table.
"The bell does not dismiss you, I do. This is routine, and before you leave I want you all to write about what we discussed. Innovation out of Necessity and entrepreneurial traits. You can write about either one. Also, frame/goals excel spreadsheets are due. There are six people that I am still missing the assignment form." Mrs. Sage rushes.
I manage to grab my belongings, leaving the spreadsheets she asked for on her desk as I exit the classroom. Ms. Sage's class was all about completing arduous tasks. But I loved it. I loved every minute of it. My grades were rewarding and the ebullience of graduating with my Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP), would be an even greater accomplishment.
The halls rose to a clamor and the bustle of students makes me feel anxious. I hurry to my locker as my stomach growls in anticipation. It was now my favorite time of the day. Lunch time. The scuttle of students towards the cafeteria entrance, urges me on. I slam my locker shut and join the crowd. It always amazed me how generous the school was to allow certain students free lunch. Its almost as if they cared for once.
The loud chatter of students was now coming from behind me. I slow down my pace, not wanting to be first in the lunch lines. It would only make me look needy. And I was far from that.
A gentle tap wrecks my train of thought. I turn around to meet Aubrey, a short brunette who was well known in our school, Enterprise Academy for Girls. She was one of the smartest students here at the academy, and one of the prettiest also. She was every girl's wannabe. At least every girl but me. Her entourage eye me from head to toe, before whispering something. They all snicker in unison. But not Aubrey. Her attention is concentrated on me. She flashes me a gentle smile, and points towards the rapidly queuing line.
"Are you in line?"
My slender frame blocks a side of the que, so I appear indecisive.
I shake my head rapidly. "No, go ahead." I say humbly. I move aside, swaying my hand for her to skip me in an awkward motion.
Aubrey hesitates, but nods gratefully. Her perky retinue trail behind her in an upright, stiff strut.
I look down, joining the group of students shortly after. My stomach growls when I see the menu items for today. I cough, an attempt to subside the voracious sound.
"What the actual fuck. This shit again?"
I look up to see Ruby, but everyone calls her Rubes. She was the closest to Aubrey amongst all of their many friends. Ruby's eyes shot daggers at the lunch lady standing across the railing that separates the students from the cooks. The lunch lady holds a solemn expression, but doesn't reply.
"I am tired of eating fish all the the goddamn time!" she exclaims. Aubrey places a hand on Rube's shoulder, indicating for her to stop. But she continues. "This school is so fucking cheap. My parents paid thousands to fund your ass and this is all you can manage to serve?"
I look away, second hand embarrassment, taking full effect.
"I'm sorry young lady, but I don't have control over the menus-"
