she always worked hard. she always tried her best. so why didn't it work? why wasn't it enough?

mae huffed as she tried to convince doctor brenner that it was too late and everyone was already out. she knew it was a lie but she didn't want anyone to get hurt.

she never knew eddie or eleven personally, but when they were captive here she tried to make sure nothing too horrible happened to them. she had a soft heart which was bad for this type of job. she had only taken it because her mom forced her to.

it had good pay and her mom was selfish. she knew that it was a shady organization but she sent her daughter there anyway. mae always resented her mother. and for a good reason too.

she just wished that she could help people. so when she came to this job, she secretly vowed to silently protect the captives and make their stay less horrible.

mae knew she wasn't able to do a lot, but even the small gestures made an impact. it didn't matter to her if the captives didn't know her, she just wanted to help them. so she snuck them extra bread and accidentally brought an extra glass of water.

"no, mae, you know we have cameras all around the building. they're in the warehouse at the moment. we still have a chance to catch them." doctor brenner said, looking down at her disapprovingly.

"oh," mae said, trying to think of another plan on the spot. "do we really need to kill eddie though? he could still be useful right?"

brenner shook his head. "he's too much of a risk. he's caused too much problems along with that elliot boy. both must be eliminated."

mae sighed. "should we just take them captive first? so you can kill them?"

brenner rolled his eyes. "mae, i do not care in the slightest who kills them, i just want them dead."

mae nodded. "okay, but what of the others? and eleven?"

"do not hurt eleven," brenner scratched his head, peering at the security camera footage. "kill the rest along with eddie and elliot. i have no use for them."

mae nodded sadly. "okay, i'll go get them."

"hurry."

mae rushed through the halls, trying her best to stop her tears.

why was she crying? it's not like she knew these people anyway. at least eleven would survive, right?

mae only cried harder. no, that's worse than death. having to live here? with these horrible people doing tests on her all the time? mae couldn't even imagine it. she had to get eleven to freedom. along with everyone else. she could not fail.

mae wiped her tears off her face.

she would not fail.

eddie helped richie walk, trying not to mind the blood seeping over his hands.

"how badly does it hurt?"

richie attempted to hide his pain. "not bad actually."

eddie narrowed his eyes. "you're lying."

richie laughed, nodding. "yeah, you guessed it, eds."

hopper stepped in front of them, still carrying the unconscious form of eleven. "this is the door to get out."

"there's only one way to get out?" richie asked.

hopper scoffed. "obviously not, you idiot. this is the closest way out. now, just because we've almost made it doesn't mean we have. for all we know there's going to be guards on the other side. so let's be careful."

they all agreed and stepped to the side, watching as hopper set eleven down and opened the door.

everyone held their breath.

hopper turned around to them, a big relieved smile on his face. "it's all clear guys! we've made it! we-"

his face drained of color as his eyes went to his bleeding stomach.

"no!" eddie cried as the only potential father figure in his life fell to the ground, and a white haired man stood behind him with a gun.

"hello, eddie."
