I was sitting with Narra, who was sleeping with her head on my lap, when John approached me. "They left." I speak low so I don't wake Narra. "What do you mean they left?" "Alyssa, didn't make it and Carter didn't want to stay." My heart broke. We were best friends since 5th grade. "Oh my god!" I think I said that a little too loud because Narra woke up. With a sleepy voice she asked, "Where's mom and dad?" I don't know how to answer that. "Um, Narra. Your father left to, uh, go find more, food." She nods. "And mom?" Oh no. "Um, she uh..." Narra looks down. "She's dead. Huh?" I nod. "Ya, when's dad coming home?" Wow, she's not even upset? "Um, he'll be home soon." She looks at me. "This isn't home, and he's not coming back." And with that she got up and left. Never once looked back. "Oh John! What are we gonna do? She's heart broken. Her father just up and left her and she doesn't have a mother, she's an orphan!" He shakes his head. "We'll watch her till Carter comes back." I nod. "I just can't believe she's gone." He sits down beside me and holds my hand with both of his. "It's ok. She died in his arms, she was happy." I nod and allow a single tear to escape my eye before getting up and walking to my tent. I'm not ok, it's not going to be ok. There is no ok anymore.
