Elaine

I don't think I've ever been so thrilled about anything in my life. My hands didn't stop sweating, which made me almost drop the microphone, the floor seemed to vanish under my feet and I was shaking all over my body.

I hope that this will be the first and last time that I have to sing alone in front of an audience or do anything at all. I was used to singing in the choir in high school, but that was together with twenty other students and with more basic songs. At least I got somewhat loud applause at the end, so I think I didn't even do that badly.

Finally, after the host has allowed me to leave the stage, I walk over to the bar, where Nora is now sitting in one of the high chairs talking to a tall and broad guy with a smile plastered on her lips. She seems to be having the time of her life, so I decide to go back to our table and enjoy the rest of the performances.

I just pull out my chair to sit down and that's when Nora comes back, out of nowhere, screaming and scaring the hell out of me. "Elaine, that was the best performance tonight. No, no, that was the best performance I have ever seen in my life! Well, your voice broke in the beginning, but still, you showed everyone how fucking amazing you can sing," she praises me.

"Really?" I ask, unsure if I was really as good as she claims, whereupon she nods her head vigorously. "Thank you, but I was so nervous and scared, that's why I was insecure at the beginning. Please remind me that I will kill you as soon as we leave the bar and no eyewitnesses are insight," I smile at her innocently and she just rolls her eyes at me. I suppose it eventually did help me to be part of the school choir in high school.

I hear the host searching for his next victim and shortly thereafter a young man I can't make out because of the crowd in front of me yells. "I volunteer!"

"He must be completely crazy or he just has confidence in his voice," Nora tries to see the young man by moving her head from left to right.

"Or he's just drunk," I chuckle.

The young man climbs up the stairs to the stage, grabs the host by his arm before he can fiddle with his precious and evil machine, and whispers something into his ear, whereupon the host glances around with an unsure look but nods indicating that he is willing to do whatever he had requested.

He turns around, and that's when I recognize him. We made eye contact for a split second during my performance, he was sitting in the front row with three other guys. He had looked at me with his dark irises and with a smug grin on his face, but I ignored him, thinking that he was like that jerk who barked in during my song anyway.

The host leaves the stage without spinning the machine and choosing a song for him and I now understand what the man's request was. He wanted to choose his song on his own. What a cheater.

If I had known that this is possible, I would have chosen twinkle, twinkle, little star.

The song he has chosen starts ringing through the speakers, him standing in the center of the stage now, grabbing the microphone and I have to smile straight away because I used to listen to this song so often when I was in college.
