Rosie had never been so furious. So desperate.

With such high standings, Rosie could just tell Rem not to kill Ryuzaki, but Rem was so...different. If it came down to Misa's death and her own death, Rem would gladly choose her own.

"Dammit! What do I do?"

No Death Note...no control...nothing.

Tears brimmed in her eyes...tears...

Later, when Rosie had calmed down, she realised that she had only cried from her loss of power. She had no feelings whatsoever for anyone. Especially not enough to cry for them.

*    *    *

She was a tad late to work. Light and Ryuzaki were busy interrogating Rem.

Rosie could see the dirty looks Light shot at the lower Shinigami; Rem answered the questions very badly. Rosie rolled her eyes and tried her best to ignore it.

Darkness clung to the air. An aura of tragedy and sorrow wavered among every breath.

Rosie did not like this feeling...she knew it from somewhere. What was it? She would know it better than anyone...

Then it hit her. Death. She could feel death in the air.

A strange, evil voice rang in her head. No time left...no time...

The members of the Task Force stood around a single computer, anxiously chattering about something she didn't care about. Light and Ryuzaki weren't around, and she sincerely hoped they were not hanging each other over the roof.

This left the three Shinigami alone on the couches.

Rosie shot daggers at Ryuk with her eyes. This was not lost on him. "What?"

"Alright, come clean. Why the hell have you been so quiet lately? You could barely keep your stupid mouth shut for five minutes, and now you just won't say anything. What gives?" She asked, lowering her voice to a harsh whisper.

Ryuk snickered. "Wouldn't you like to know."

Rosie would have leaped out of her seat and back-slapped him halfway across the room if it hadn't been for the genius duo that walked in at that very moment.

The frantic Task Force members piped up at once. or, more specifically, Matsuda did. "Ryuzaki! What's the meaning of this? You've somehow gotten the approval from another country to use the notebook for an execution?"

Rosie was genuinely surprised. And also relieved. Well, that would explain the aura of death...

"I'm going to try out the notebook for real."

The entire Task Force gasped. Just keeps on bringing the surprises.

"We're very close. If we work this out, the whole case will be solved."

Lightning cracked from outside.

Rosie's attention, despite how intrigued she was, was immediately drawn somewhere else.

Rem was walking through the wall, into the next room. Where is she going...no...she couldn't be...

Rosie knew. She knew. If the case was solved, Misa would be arrested along with Light. And something as drastic as being Kira and the second Kira would have equally drastic punishments. Even the death penalty.

Killing Ryuzaki would save Misa from that.

Rosie had never cared about Ryuzkai's actual death until then. Now she felt like throwing up.

Wait...why do I care? He's just a human. Humans are worthless. I don't care...I don't...

Rosie glanced at Ryuzaki. He had no idea...it wasn't fair...

Who the hell am I kiding? I do care! I was crying for him!

Without a second's notice, she bolted for the door. Her heels clicked noisily down the halls.

"Wait! Rosie!" Someone called, but she didn't care who.

Her heart pounded hard. It was going to explode...

Rosie took a wild guess and threw a random door open.

The only thing she noticed was a black notebook laying in a pile of sand. Rosie snatched it up and flipped through it so forcefully that she managed to tear the seams.

There, written in black and white, was L Lawliet.

No...

Through the walls, Rosie heard faint shouts. "Ryuzaki!"

She threw the Death Note down and rushed back to the Investigation Room. She tripped over her own feet and the hall stretched on for forever...

She threw open the door...

The room was bathed in red light. The Task Force was more anxiously gathered around than ever. Light was down on his knees, holding something - no, someone in his arms. "No!"

Rosie ran to Ryuzaki's other side, taking him from Light.

Deep onyx orbs stared into her eyes with terrible sorrow...and then started to close...slowly...slowly...

And they shut.

Silver tears ran over her cheeks. Hastily, she pressed her ear to his chest, the heartbeat she wanted to hear so badly wasn't there.

Rosie pulled away and dug her nails into his side and back. "D-DAMMIT! Get up! You're still alive, I know it! Open your eyes!"

Nothing.

Her vision was blurry. She couldn't believe it...

Rosie looked up at Light. His facial emotions transitioned second after second. One was triumphant, another was joy, there was an angry one...and a sad, mournful one.

But the joyous, triumphant emotion won.

She looked back down at Ryuzaki. His face was blank and lifeless...his skin was paler than ever and ice-cold.

Rosie, for the first time ever, used her eyes on him. His name - L Lawliet - wavered above his head, but there were no numbers. None...

She couldn't bear the sight anymore. Rosie sobbed into his chest, digging her nails in deeper.

Then her sorrow started to burn. Burn like anger.

And she screamed. Aizawa took Ryuzaki from her as she stood up and made for the exit.

"Wait!" Light clasped her wrist. "Rosie..."

"You got what you wanted, you bastard! Leave me alone!"

Shocked, Light let go of her wrist, and she went outside into the cold.

Rosie walked the empty streets, just not alone. Ryuk, of all things trailed beside her.

"Really, what do you want?"

No answer.

"I swear Ryuk, you tell me or I'll personally rip your head off myself -"

"I'm sorrry, kiddo."

She was taken aback. "Excuse me?"

"Sorry, kid. I saw this one coming a mile away. I just didn't want you to get hurt."

Ryuk continued down the street, but Rosie stopped in her tracks.

Maybe some Shinigami are worth something after all.
