Subtle differences (Embry Call)

Chapter 18

Sue lead us into her kitchen where we placed everything on the counter. She appeared to be holding herself together in this moment probably for her childrens sake but you could see the sorrow look in her brown eyes.

"Are you named after Nyarah the great witch from our legends?" She asks trying to avoid the real conversation that was going to take place in a short while.

"Actually I'm that same Nyarah, like the shifters as long as I continue to use my powers then I don't age, been like this for over four thousand years," I explained trying to help her defuse the tension in the house.

She smiled "Its kind of you to care for my family's loss even though you aren't part of the tribe," she exclaims as Emily began making pots of tea and coffee.

"Well I was sort of welcomed into the tribe all those years ago and still hold an attachment to it and it's people," I declare offering her a small smile.

"The others are in the living room," she says placing some sweets on a plate and pointing towards the door "It's through there,"

With that I made my way into the living room my strong senses practically absorbing the pain, sadness and grief that filled the room to the brim. There were two teens sitting on the couch, ones I didn't know, and I knew they were Sue's kids. A pretty dark haired girl who was about Sam's age, and a boy no more than 15, the same age I lost my whole family.

I'm not usually one for drawing attention to myself but I sensed that both of them would shift soon and I also knew what they were going through, so I decided to give them my condolences.

"I'm terribly sorry for your loss, I'll make it quick and simple because I've been where you are and I know grief works in different ways," I say sitting down in front of them. The girl, like her mother was hiding her emotions well but the boy was crying softly making look more childlike despite his growing physique.

"That's incredibly nice of you since you don't know us," the boy says looking up from his lap offering a pained smile. I could feel the guys watching our interaction, seeing where this might go.

"It's no trouble at all, I lost my whole village when I was around your age so I know how you feel and I know you don't want people pitying you but I don't, I'm more like relating to you in a sense. Also I'm a friend of Emily's and Embry's girlfriend. I'm going to be there for them and your family in any way that I can," I admit showing them some sympathy.

My reply made the girl look over at me, a look of pain carved into her pretty features "You don't have to do that for us," she says with an almost incoherent snuffle.

"I don't mind, believe it or not but the tribe holds a special place in my heart," I confirmed which made the boy smile.

"I'm Seth and this is Leah," he says finally introducing them. I can tell that when in a better mood this kid is quite happy and enthusiastic.

"I'm Nyarah," I say holding out my hand which they both shook.

"Like the witch from our legends," Seth exclaims and I smiled.

"Something like that," I say with a small laugh. We chatted some more before my phone rang and I apologized excusing myself before answering it.

Me: Hello

??: Nyarah where are you?

Me: Alice what's wrong??

Alice: It's Bella she jumped off a cliff and I think is drowning. I didn't see her getting pulled out of the water!

Me: What do you mean she jumped off a cliff?? My god how could I just leave her unprotected?

I knew the guys could hear everything Alice was frantically saying through the phone as they gave me sympathetic looks, it was then that I noticed that they all had shirts on for like the first time since I met them.

"It's alright Nye. Jakes with her, shes alright," Sam says as I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding before going back to Alice.

Me: it's alright Sam says she's with Jake so she's alright. She should be home soon.

Alice: Of Course!! I can't see past that pack of mutts. ARG.

Me: Well I'll see you later, stay safe.

Alice: Bye Nye.

When she hung up I heard a group of inaudible and inhumane growls from the wolves standing about the room clearing not happy I was talking to their mortal enemy.

"Remind me to re-kill that vamp when I see him again," I mumbled under my breath because Bella had told me about seeing him when she did something dangerous, this made the guys laugh softly. We spent a few more hours at the Clearwater house before going home.

I dropped Emily and Sam back at theirs before making it to my own. I had just gotten settled into bed when I got a call from Jake saying that Bella had left for Italy with Alice to go save Edward.
