MARTHA

"You sacrificed your power and created hope. You gave us all hope, giving us the ability to expect the unexpected, and made yourself and your sisters the strongest Goddesses out there who could decide whether or not to get our wishes fulfilled."

"Hoping may be pleasurable, but hope defeated can be quite painful."

"There are many situations in which a realistic acceptance of a possibly negative outcome is more beneficial than clinging to a hope counter to what is quite probably not going to happen."

"Hope is good. But it can be as good as a prayer. Just wishing for something rather than more forcefully working towards it."

I groaned out in frustration as small fragments of words kept swimming through my mind like ink and left a stain of despair within my heart. My mind kept running back to the day when I had finally told Austin that I wanted to give up. I knew and could understand the pain and anger I felt towards my own destiny.

No wonder why everyone is mad at me.

"Mom, you shouldn't have come there to save me. I deserved to die." I pout and a hand came to rest on my shoulder, squeezing it.

"It wasn't entirely your fault, Martha. We knew what you had created but we still didn't tell you." Chloe whispered guiltily and stale anger raged through me.

"Yes, why did you not tell me? I don't understand why my own sisters keep things from me!" I looked up at her in protest, my lips trembling as I stifle a sob.

"Because we thought that if we tell you, you will try ending the power. Had you ended the power, you would have died again." Lila stuttered.

"And what good did it to me? We are talking about the whole world here who is put into danger because of me." I argued and my sisters' heads hangs down guiltily.

"What good did it do? Honey, you are alive and that is all that matters." Mother kissed on top of my head and I was about to argue more but she pushed a piece of dark chocolate in my mouth before I could talk more. The dark brown sweet melted in my mouth instantly and I moaned.

"Eat it and get some sleep. I will go now." Mother smiled at me and turned to leave.

"Mother, what should I do?" I groaned, my mouth full.

"I don't know. But definitely don't kill yourself. Accepting defeat is not the same as waiting for a fine result. It will take time but it will happen." She winked at me and disappeared into a whirl of wind.

"I have no idea what she meant. But I am going to pretend that I am a normal teenager and going to marry my bed for a while. You guys okay with that?" I looked at my sisters and they nodded. My gaze shifted to Austin who remained silent.

"Austin, can I talk to you for a second? Come with me." I said and ran upstairs to my room.

"What?" He came after a minute.

"Are you mad at me?" I narrowed my eyes at him, suspiciously.

"Should I not be." He frowns. "Why do you have to keep betting against yourself? You almost killed yourself again!" He screamed.

"What did I do?"

"Sweetie, the last time I checked, you were about to stab yourself again with that stupid sword of destiny or whatever it is."

"What was I supposed to do? I still don't know what to do."

"Like Nyx said, killing yourself isn't always the answer." He repeated her lines and I bobbed my head in agreement.

"I just want it all to be over. Please don't fight with me." I pouted and he rolled his eyes. I narrowed my eyes at him and an idea popped in my head. I could use another tactic. "And, for the record, I could have asked you millions of questions about Cassandra but I didn't. Come on, now. Don't be like this." I circled my fingers in his hair and a smile crept on his face.

"You are asking me now." He grinned.

"I was so shocked to know when mother told me a few minutes ago! And, you didn't even tell me that you had a girlfriend before!" I rolled my eyes and he kissed my cheek, smiling.

"Do I look like the kind of guy who stays single for too long, Martha? Women worship me!" He flipped his hair.

"You wish!" I slapped his arm and he chuckled.

"Well, yeah you are not the kind of guy to remain single for long. Because I don't intend to leave you anymore." I toed up and kissed his lips.

Someone clears their throat and we both turn.

"Paige!" I squeal when I see my childhood friend standing near my bedroom doorway, giggling furiously behind her hands. She opens her arms in a hug as I lunge onto her.

"Okay so I think I should leave." Austin scratches his head and leaves.

Paige wiggles her eyebrows at me with a tease. "Austin!"

"Shut up! What are you doing here?"

"I am here to remind someone something because it seems that someone forgot someone's birthday!" She rolled her eyes and I frowned, confused.

"Can you repeat what you just said?"

She rolled her eyes. "It was my birthday today, idiot!"

I gaped. "Oh fuck, I am so sorry, Paige! How can I forget? I am the worst! I am an idiot!"

"Major!" She agreed.

"I am seriously sorry. A lot was going on and it just totally slipped my mind."

"What?" She wiggled her eyebrows.

"Ugh, nothing. Turns out I created a power called 'Hope' ages ago and everyone is now against me. Even my own cousins. They think that I created Hope to my advantage because according to them Hope begets expectations. And when I don't fulfill them, then I am the worst." I explain, sighing loudly.

"Can't you just take that power back?" She chewed the inside of her cheek and I shook my head.

"Okay then maybe you can try creating another power to counter attack 'hope'." She shrugged and I stared at her.

"You are a fucking genius, aren't you?" I grinned.
