"So... What are your plans for today?" Virgil sighed as he glanced over at his father who was to busy eating to even notice his look. "Virgil..."
"I'm just going into town, is all. I thought I would do some shopping." The man's eyes narrowed as Virgil swallowed his anxiety. "Unless you do not want me too?"
"It's your birthday correct?" Virgil nodded timidly as the man laughed. "Alright. I see no harm in that."
"Actually, father..." Virgil bit his lip as he let his hands slowly drop to his lap, his anxiety making him less hungry as time went on. "I was wondering... since it is my birthday and all... Can I..."
"Absolutely not." Virgil flinched as his father glared at him.
"But... I didn't even ask you..."
"I said no Virgil." Virgil simply nodded as he slowly picked his uneaten food up with a frown. "Where do you think you're going?"
"To do my chores?" His father laughed with a roll of his eyes as Virgil shook slightly. "May I be excused?"
"As you wish..." The man growled coldly as he watched Virgil leave. "I thought I had a son... not this bitch."
"I'm not a bitch." Virgil groaned as he slowly shut the front door with a sigh. He shook his head pushing his hood up over his head to hide himself more as he looked around. He didn't have much he had to do. He did the most of it the night prior while his father slept. He himself couldn't calm down so he had to do something. That's usually the case after his father's... episodes. Virgil sighed as he bit his lip and forced himself to move. Just a few more hours. Just a few more hours and he'd have the rest of the week to himself. He just had to wait and then his father will be gone doing... god knows whatever it is assholes do during a week-long bender.
"Virgil!" Virgil jumped only to relax hearing the soft laughter behind him. "What's up with ya kiddo?" Virgil clammed up only being able to offer a soft smile at the bubbly man beside him. His eyes shined with a light Virgil just didn't see in himself anymore. In fact, not many have that light. Only Patton... "Kiddo?" Virgil hugged himself tighter as he placed a hand to his lips and Patton smiled sadly. "No talking day?" Virgil only nodded.
"Well, that's ok, Kiddo. You don't have to talk." Virgil smiled slightly as Patton giggled. "Where you off to?" Virgil bit his lip as he swung his hands making Patton laugh at the action. "Wood?" Again Virgil nodded as Patton got lost in thought for a second. "Would you like me to join you?" Virgil shook his head and pointed to the basket in Patton's hands. "It's ok. I'm sure Jan would..."
"N-No... P-Patton-n." Patton sighed as he nodded shifting the basket slightly in his hands.
"Well, ok then, kiddo. If you're certain. But, Virgil?" Virgil's eyes darkened as Patton brushed his hair back to reveal his black and blue eye. "Can you maybe step back from the fighting? I don't know why you're doing it but... I don't like seeing you so hurt." Virgil jumped back fixing his hair to cover his face as he pulled his hood more to cover him. Patton sighed as he nodded. "I understand. I'll see you later than Virgil. Happy birthday, kiddo."
Virgil let out a soft grumble as he hugged himself tighter. He cared for Patton. He was his best friend but sometimes... Sometimes Patton just made things worse. Virgil deflated as he started for the woods. He didn't have to get wood but he did have to get away. He couldn't take it. The entire village saw him as this punk. No matter how much he tried to hide the cuts and bruises his father gave him he couldn't hide them all. Eventually, people started talking. As Virgil got older and started to pull away, hiding himself in dark baggy clothing, people started to get this image of him in their head. Rumors went around and... Now for some odd reason, Virgil is seen as this delinquent who spends his nights fighting for cash, drugs, or whatever else they happen to think. The completely ignore his personality and mental issues to instead focus only on that. Mainly because Virgil hasn't set them straight.
How exactly is a selective mute, anxiety-ridden, abused man who still is forced to live with said abuser and cannot escape him supposed to say anything to set the facts straight?
The answer is he can't... so he doesn't.
Virgil slowly made his way through the woods pushing forward as far as he could go... until he made it to his special spot. It's a small little pond surrounded by all these bright wildflowers. Virgil loved it here. He actually let himself smile as he laid down in the greenery. He didn't know how long he'd be able to stay but as long as he was here he knew he was safe.
"Happy Birthday, Virgil." Virgil whispered to himself. "Happy birthday to me." Virgil felt his tears start to fall as he remembered just what he wanted to ask his father. He should have known better. Had he actually asked chances are he would have just set his father off again. He's not allowed to and he knew that. He just thought... no... he wanted it so badly. And his father said no... "I'm sorry mother. I won't be able to visit you this year either."
"I'll try again lat..." Virgil jumped up the moment he heard a twig snapped only to go white with fear. Right there on the other side of the pond stood a grey wolf with gleaming golden-colored eyes. Virgil scrambled to his feet only to whimper as the wolf growled with warning. It's head dipped in curious examination as Virgil stood there shaking. His heart was pounding in his chest as his eyes darted from the wolf to his escape route and back again. The wolf's eyes seemed to narrowed as Virgil shifted back. It took only a second. The moment the wolf took that step forward Virgil took off like a bat out of hell. He ran, ignoring the burning of his lungs or the ache in his legs. He didn't stop till he tripped and found himself staring at the dirt round beneath him. He looked up to see people just frozen staring at him in confusion. He couldn't care less. He pushed himself up ignoring how shaky his body was and headed home desperately praying to forget those golden eyes.
