FLIGHTLESS BIRD

I saw an angel once
Arms spread wide in mid flight
Waiting for the gust of wind
That will pick her up and rocket her
Through the sky
Nobody else saw her but me
In the back seat of my mother's car
Staring through the cars stuck on the bridge
Because that's how rush hour is

Between the impatient honks
And the ant crawl to the next exit
I was the only one unbothered
Enough to see her
A falling angel
Her halo of hair picked up by the wind
Suspended there in zero gravity
How she got there was a story
I'll never know

Maybe she was pushed out of heaven
And the only way to get back
Was in the dark waters below
Or she could be on a mission
One that needed her to be there at that moment
With her toes dangling off the railing

She must've felt my eyes on her
Because she turned her head enough
For me to see not the face of an angel
No
This girl was a bird with clipped wings
With enough feathers on her back
For one final landing
And just like that, she was gone
Vanishing behind a moving truck

Even now I still wonder
If a flightless takeoff
Is worth finding out
What comes after
