Chapter 4
Kronos POV

It was already morning when I returned.  My chest was covered in drying red blood but otherwise I was fine.
Jackie runs around my leg happily before zooming away and diving on my bed.  I pat her golden head before heading to the shower.  My phone rings.

     "Hello-"

"Kronos get your ass here.  We can't wait all day for your fuckin-... Uh sorry Kayn... Yes I know,  you don't like cursing. "

My eyes get as big as saucers in the bathroom mirror, I grab my pants and struggle into them balancing my phone on my jaw. "Michiell?  Oh shit!  I'll be there soon."

~••~••~••

I barely made it into the lobby when Kayn's cold eyes fell on me. I felt slightly embarrassed for being late when I realized she'd been waiting for me.  She stands and says something to Michiell who glares at me before responding to her then leaving.

"Sorry for being late. " I apologize, briefly before turning to Michiell a grateful smile which he answers by inconspicuously showing me the finger.  He's mad alright.

"It's fine..." Kayn looks at her watch, "I suppose we still have time."

She glances towards her again watch but looks at something else. Surprise registers on her face before she tries to hide it but I had already caught it.
She reads the report then places it back in it's folder.

"What other information do we have on Carrie?" She asks gently tapping her pen against her cheek.

"She is a 26 year old who works at  Victoria Secret in the day and goes to college at night.  Commonly seen supporting the hetero ally march.
She has one major infraction. Two years ago she was caught speeding and driving without a license. Basically a typical young adult "As i report Kayn reads the paper silently but there was no doubting her seriousness.  It was cute, in a way.

She walks towards the car and I trail behind.  She leaves the driving to me and heads to the passengers seat.  It was a surprise, but I don't question it.  Everyone has their own preferences.  Maybe she just didn't like to drive.

"Caesar Street.  The Triath apartments." she instructs gently,  going through her little folder again without even looking over at me.

The silence gets awkward and I think of something to say. Anything really. She didn't seem to notice or care as she continued going through her folder.  A bit of curiosity grabs my and I glance at her folder. It was a normal folder but it was filled with lots of papers, neatly placed in and orderly, maybe even a bit too orderly.  It was a bit intimidating to be completely honest but I chose not to disturb her and whatever she was reading.
I admired her through the rear view mirror, watching her golden eyes as she read.  Her chestnut hair falling into her eyes, but she didn't even bother to brush them away.  Gently leaning her head,  she reads around them.  Childish.
Smoothly I drive into the parking lot.    Kayn doesn't bother to look up,   she slides out and walks into the building . She rings a doorbell. No. 4.  She was so indifferent it borderlined on aloofness, but why? Had my lateness somehow offended her?

         Seconds later someone emerges.

A head of platinum blonde peaks out the door. "Hello?"

"Carrie Robbin? I'm Kayn Gayle and this is Kronos Lucio,  we have come to investigate a complaint lodged against you." Kayn smiles politely but it doesn't reach her eyes,  she extends her hands and give the woman a firm handshake, the woman isn't detected at all and looks at us exitedly.  It was unnerving.  She was like the polar opposite of the reclusive Kayn, but I'd prefer Kayn anyway over the weird woman.

"Oh yes please come in. Make yourselves comfortable." Carrie smiles elatedly and welcomes us inside with undamped enthusiasm even though we were investigating her. She was really strange. "Would you like something to drink? I've got drinks or would you like some  Soda?"

Kayn's smile widens, the smile was surprisingly normal. "Well.... If you dont mind. Ill have a drink. Chilled."

Carrie smiled happily bouncing off missing the way the smile drips off of Kayn's face like melted butter.

"I didn't think a straight laced detective like you would have a drink on the job." I commented, she doesn't really appreciate my humor.

She slightly glares at me."I don't drink."

I shrug and glance around. Nothing was out of place.  It was beautiful yes... It was comfortable, the shelf filled with the same bubbly individual we met but with her family, Her mother, her father and her little brother.  Perfectly normal but strange.
A look from Kayn told me that she agreed.  Everything was just too perfect. There was nothing out of place.  Everything was just. Off.

Click.

Carrie returns from the kitchen with a two brand new glock in her hands pointed at both of us.  The glowing smile still on her face as if this was the most normal occurrence in the world.

This is why I prefer working alone.

My fingers itch to pull out my scythe but I can't with Kayn in the room.  That would only bring problems that I had no time to handle.

Kayn doesn't look too surprised, but with obvious unconcern for her life she spoke. "You're not Carrie, are you?"
