Chapter 18
Kronos POV

I watch as he leaves in his car feeling very confused.  Helplessly I could only turn and enter the building.

“Kayn has a good taste in men.”  Adrianna comments, staring after the car.

“I thought you were too busy trying to seduce me to notice.” I respond, an amused smile tugging on my lips.

She gives me a once over with her eyes, before looking at the floor. “You’re boring.  You’re hot, yeah but you don’t have fun with it.  He knows he’s hot and he wants everyone to know it. My kind of guy.” She gives a self-mocking smile before she leaves

I ignore her words before heading to my desk. “Yo, Michiell.  Do you know who Nickoli is?”

“You only come talk to Ol’ Michiell when you want something, eh?” Michiell turns around and glares at me.

“If I didn’t know you, I’d think you were a little spurned shrew wife.” I point at his face. “You fit the part one hundred percent.”

He glares at me; he hates when I make fun of his face.  It was quite easy to make fun of him though, he got angry easily.

“At least I don’t look like a middle age truck driver.  I just look a bit young.”

“Michiell, you look like a twenty-year-old girl.” It was an exaggeration, but I wouldn’t let his jab slide.

He looks at me for a few seconds before sighing heavily, I take this time to repeat myself.

“Nickoli? Oh yeah, I remember him.  He was Adrianna’s obsession before you came.” Michiell sips his coffee while drumming his desk with his fingers. “He’s the boss’s childhood friend… Honestly I’m kind of sure he’s carrying a torch for her.  Not quite sure if she knows or maybe she doesn’t care.  Either way he’s really pitiful.  He dated Adrianna for a while before he suddenly left.”

I nod, ‘’That explains her reaction when she saw him this morning.”
Michiell’s face lights up. “He’s here? Why didn’t you say so earlier?”

“You know. For a detective you’re quite dumb.  How could I know to ask about him if he left before I started working here and if I never met him.”

Adrianna comes over to my desk, it was the first time I saw such a serious expression on her face. Subconsciously I sit up in my chair. “We got a report of another suspected fallen case.  You’re checking this out with Kayn in an hour… Where’s Piper?”

Piper walks over, a deep frown on her face as she takes a file from Adrianna, “I swear, people don’t treat private investigators with the respect we deserve.  If I have to investigate a cheater one more time, I’m slitting the guy’s throat myself.”

A smile spreads across my face, she glares at me. “Don’t feel so happy. If it weren’t for the reportings of ‘fallen’ activity on the rise and Kayn needing help, you’d be stuck doing this too.”

Michiell snorts. “Don’t mind him. Kronos’ life purpose is to look down on mere mortals like me and you.”

I ignore Michiell’s childishness. “why do you think the cases are rising?”

Piper rolls her eyes. “What cases?  Everyone is just paranoid.  The only reason the cases are rising here is because regular detective agencies won’t take this type of case. “

“Hey Piper, you remember that one time there were rats in this one companies vents but the owner was sure that fallens bugged his office to steal trade secrets?” Michiell snorts loudly as Piper giggles.

“Look Kronos, I’ve been working here for years.  Fallens don’t exist. They’re as real as the Easter bunny.  Ask Kayn she could tell you.  The only fallens I know are hardened criminals who we put in jail… where they belong.” Piper finishes, before turning to continue giggling with Michiell.

Something here is not quite right.
