Not the Berg & Wahlberg's best work.
I'm really annoyed by the use of the "s" in this name and I know it's irrational. But I just don't like "spenser" when my brain desperately wants "spencer." Peter Berg is one of my favourite action directors and I was pretty stoked to see him and Mark Wahlberg back together yet again in this Netflix drop. I think it's their 5th film together?
Probably the prior Marky-Mark film this reminds me most of is The Big Hit, but he's not nearly as delightfully funny in this. Does have some similar vibes though. Spenser is a cop who gets out of jail, teams up with his roomie and ex-jail mentor to try and sort out what's going down with the bad-cops getting done over. Sort of ex-cop obsessed PI type set up.
There's some decent action. There's some funny bits. I like a filter more than the next guy, but this washes out all sky from blue to white. My partner thought it was riveting and kept doing quite different things. I thought it was okay.
J* gives it 3 stars.
