When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
That was the advice given to Sophie Foster pretty much everyday.
She complained a lot, yes. She did have a lot of things going on, and life was complicated. Her boyfriend had just broken up with her with no warning. Her grandmother was in the hospital after she collapsed earlier that day when doing grocery shopping. Her mom, like always, wasn't home.
But the second her best friend Biana advised her with, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade", she stood up and walked out the door, planning on following her advice.
Literally.
So there she was, trying to make lemonade, and failing.
She absolutely didn't not think it was going to be this hard.
It had been too sour, and then too sweet. Too much water and then too little.
She'd seen little kids handling lemonade stands all the time! So why didn't hers work out?
She had almost given up when a teal-eyed boy holding a skateboard stopped at the stand.
He looked at her with questioning eyes, almost as if asking "are you selling lemonade or not?". She just held out a cup, and he eyed her warily as he took it.
"It's trash, it tastes disgusting-so it's free." Sophie muttered, staring hard at the wooden table.
The boy took a sip, then made a face, turned around, and spit it out.
"That's gross." He laughed, handing her the cup back. "Do you know how to make lemonade?"
She felt his eyes bearing onto her as she shook her head no, still looking down at the table.
"Well then, that can be fixed."
She looked up into his teal eyes, taking in the boy in front of her for the first time. Chocolate brown hair, teal eyes, and taller than her. But wasn't everyone?
He stared at her, his eyes filled with sympathy.
And because she was so done with this lemonade business, she accepted his offer to help her without a fight. She still had lemons and water and sugar left, anyway.
He carefully spooned out the measurements as she cut lemons, as he tried to start a conversation.
"Anyway, what's your name? I don't think you ever told me."
"Sophie. Sophie Foster."
He nodded. "Fitz. Fitz Vacker."
She glared at him for the mocking of her words, but he didn't look at her, instead asking,
"Why are you out here making lemonade anyway? You obviously don't know how."
She shrugged. "I don't know, for fun?" She lied.
This time he did look up at her, skepticism written all over his face.
Any normal person would have brushed off the comment, knowing it was a lie.
Fitz Vacker was not any normal person.
"Oh come on. You don't look like you're having fun."
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Maybe I'm tired of people giving me advice."
He stared at her for a second, a blank expression on his face, and then he laughed, hard. His laughter was contagious, and soon she was laughing with him, at her own self, something she didn't do often. When they finally stopped, he smiled at her.
"Well now I get it. You should've just told me that in the beginning. Come on, let's get rid of all your lemons." He said, winking. She laughed, and all the tension between them was instantly gone. They laughed and talked like they'd known each other for forever (all we see is light, for forever) , even though they had only met a couple hours ago.
Finally, they had they're lemonade stand set up- Sophitz's Lemonade Stand. They had both agreed that Sophie's name should come first, because it was, after all, her idea.
It was a blast, and they made over 20 dollars for each of them. Sophie had to admit, Fitz was way better at making lemonade than her.
Once the sun began to set, they began to close up, Fitz drinking the few cups of lemonade they had left. "Well, that was fun, Sophie." He said, smiling at her. She smiled back, grabbing the last cup of lemonade and drinking it. "I better be getting home now, though." He grabbed his skateboard from where he had laid it behind the counter.
"You're just going to leave me with this mess?" She protested, shoving some empty plastic cups into his hands. He laughed, leaning closer. "Yes, yes I am."
Just then Sophie realized how close they were. She could feel his breath on the tip of her nose, and she saw him smile, and then lean in as her eyes fluttered closed.
He kissed her.
It felt like fireworks, and it ended way to quickly for Sophie. As soon as it ended, he was on his skateboard, saluting at her before whizzing away.
She sighed, leaning on her elbows and she slumped down in the chair behind the table.
Suddenly, she noticed a folded white paper sitting on the counter, and she picked it up, unfolding it, smiling as she read it. She pocketed it and left the lemonade stand there to clean up another time. Right now, though, she had other things to do.
Such as calling the number on the paper.
