It had been a few months since I had come to Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. The Headmistress, Cordelia Goode, is a kind woman, but she seems to fear those who wish to learn and grow beyond her control. I had begun to reach and study Non-verbal spells, but Cordelia told me that no one has ever been able to do that nor would it be wise to try. We had welcomed a new girl into the coven, Mallory. Cordelia thinks she is promising in her magical abilities. From what I've seen and heard she is wise beyond her years.
One afternoon, I had gone to talk to Cordelia in her office, "what did I tell you about reading this material?"
I shake my head, "I'm not practicing it. What harm is there in reading."
"Rose, this has never been tried before and I do not appreciate you disobeying me and continuing this line of study."
"I thought you said I could study whatever I want."
"You can, but..."
"But you have to approve it." I shake my head, "at this rate, I might as well go live with the Warlocks. My head may be underground but at least I'd be able to study what I wish."
"How do you know about them?"
"You really need to check the books in your library."
"Maybe that's not a bad idea." I turn and see Mallory poking her head into the room.
"Mallory, did you need something?" Cordelia stands.
"No." Mallory shakes her head, "I just overheard the conversation. But, maybe it is a good idea for Rose to go stay and study with the Warlocks."
"What do you mean?"
"They are excluded from our community, that can't be healthy for the relationship between our people."
I nod, "she's right. From what I've read, relations between witches and warlocks are very poor."
"And what makes you think you could change that?" Cordelia looks over to me.
"Because it would be someone who can live in their world, who you would be willing to listen to."
Mallory nods, "if Rose wants to leave, why not make it benefit everyone."
Coredlia takes a deep breath, "fine. But you have to check in once a week and come to council meetings once a month. And of course, you cannot date any of the students."
I nod, "of course."
Cordelia walks around the table, "Come on, we should see Queenie off before she leaves."
Mallory smiles over to me and whispers, "don't worry, I'm sure they have a few handsome professors."
I chuckle, "I would never date a professor. I mean, who does that?"
The three of us head downstairs and find Queenie, who whoops happily, "guess who's going to Hollywood."
"You are." Cordelia laughs. "And it seems like Rose is going with you."
"Really? Lucky for you I hope you like The Price is Right 'cause it's Plinko all day, ho. And we got tickets. And I found a really cute hotel. It's, like, old, but it's been renovated, and it's downtown. It's kind of..."
"No." Mallory shakes her head, "I know I don't know either of you, but... you don't wanna stay downtown."
"Who's this?"
"I'm Mallory."
"Queenie."
"This is Mallory and it's her first day." Cordelia places a hand on Mallory's back.
"Ah. Welcome."
Mallory smiles, "I've just heard the traffic in L.A. is brutal and it would take you over an hour to get to the beach."
"Right, yeah. Um... I'm not gonna fly 2,000 mile just to see the highway."
"Why don't you just transmutation there?"
I chuckle, "because neither of us can do that, let alone that far."
"I bet you could, if you try hard enough." Mallory smiles.
