Two weeks later, Bridgette and John go out on a date night. Clara watches Emily at home with Dylan. This is frequent in the Burton household. Clara and Dylan have been better parents to Emily than her biological ones could ever be. Clara and Emily have an unbreakable bond. While they are strengthening their relationship with Emily, John and Bridgette are at a low point in theirs. John has figured out about David and is furious. He gets extremely drunk and is screaming really loudly at her. Bridgette tries to calm him down but he won’t budge. He storms out of the restaurant and gets in his car. He is not thinking clearly. Bridgette tries to stop him from driving but he pushes her down and drives off. He is driving like a mad man. Within a few moments of departure he is already at about one hundred miles per hour. He runs several red lights and miraculously isn’t hit. Within a short time the police are following him. He is trying to avoid them when he takes a sharp right turn and his car spins out of control. He keeps spinning and spinning continuously. After a short while he is off of the road and into a forest. He evades a few trees until in an instant his streak of lucky breaks ends. He smashes into a tall butternut tree. The nearby police rush him to the hospital where he is taken to the emergency room and treated immediately. Bridgette has hitched a ride with a taxi driver and has followed John every step of the way. When she arrives at the hospital John is approaching his last breath. When he sees her he mutters what will turn out to be his last words, “ Hey butternut, I need to tell you something. There’s only one thing I’ve ever loved in my life. My parents were never there. I have no siblings. And I have no friends. Emily is the only thing I’ve ever loved. I never loved you. I was going to leave you until Emily came along. I might not always act like it but I love that child more than I’ve ever loved anything. And I need you to promise me this. You will do everything in your power to raise that girl right after I die. And do me a favor and tell the girl who her dad is. No girl should ever live without her father.” Right as he says this he leaves this twisted world.
