My water bottle suddenly became very interesting. "What is this about Jace's lips being swollen?"

I could feel Eli's eyes burning holes into my forehead. "Hazel, by the Angel, if you d–"

"Okay, fine!" I exasperated, throwing my hands in the air, but refusing to meet his eyes. "We may've..."

"Dear God, Azel, please tell me you didn't lose your virginity to a blonde."

My eyes widened and couldn't help but meet his with that accusation. "What– no!"

Eli was staring at me with even wider eyes, the only major difference was that his were filled with disappointment. "So..."

"We may've... kissed, but that's it."

"Well, I would hardly call it a kiss."

My eyes immediately shut, and I mentally face palmed at the sudden voice imposing upon our conversation. Why did he have to show up everywhere?

"Oh, look who it is." Eli muttered. "The grinch who stole Hazel's vir–"

"I'M STILL A VIRGIN!"

Footsteps of other shadowhunters who'd been walking by in the hall quickly sped up.

Meanwhile, Eli ignored me, still staring at Jace. "How convenient that you would show up in the kitchen right now."

Jace raised an eyebrow, sidestepping me to get to the fridge. I ignored the racing of my heart as he passed. "Well seeing as it is eight am and I am starving, yes, it is convenient that I am standing in the kitchen getting breakfast."

I sighed as Eli rolled his eyes. Boys.

"So, Azel, how was your sleep?"

I raised my chin as I turned around to meet his golden eyes which were looking down at me from over the rim of the glass of orange juice he had poured and was now drinking out of. Shooting him a sickly sweet smile, I answered, "Why, it was splendid, Jace. How about yours?"

He hummed. "It was a little restless if I'm being totally honest."

"Oh, how unfortunate."

He swallowed the juice, and I couldn't help but watch as his adam's apple bobbed up and down. "No, actually." My eyes found his again. "I finally woke up from this crazy dream that I'd somehow been confusing with reality."

I blinked. And then blinked again.

Eli tried to grab my wrist to get me to leave, but I shook him off. "Oh you mean the one where you thought you could have two girls by using one and lying to the other?"

Anger flashed through Jace's bronze eyes as he set his cup down and took a step towards me. Despite our three inch height difference, I had to crane my neck to look up at him as we stood chest to chest. "No, actually; I believe I finally got rid of the girl who was using me to forget her sorry, pathetic, worthless life."

It felt like I'd been punched. Or slapped across the face, or stabbed right in my heart, or something that would cause that hole within me to rip completely open. I unconsciously took a step back from Jace, trying my best to suppress the tears that I could feel fill my eyes as I looked up at him. There was nothing there. His stare was blank as if he was in shock of what'd he'd just said, but more than that, it was as if he didn't care.

"You fucker."

In a heartbeat, Eli was on him, tackling him to the ground and managing to get one punch in before Jace took control and flipped Eli over so that he was on his back as Jace punched him in the face. Over and over and over.
