"Hey Kendra," Drew said before thinking about what left his mouth, as always. "Have you ever seen a Dark Lurker?"
That caught her off guard but she regained her composure easily. "No," she said slowly.
Drew nodded and got up. He went to the bedroom and packed his things then went downstairs to inform Kendra of his departure. He found her sitting on the couch sipping a cup of black liquid.
"What's in that?" he asked curiously as he joined her on the couch.
"Just some remedy for hair." she shrugged and continued to sip the thick black liquid. "You were leaving?"
Drew looked at his bag and nodded. He heard her sigh softly. "I can stay if you want me to"
Kendra looked up from her glass and shook her head, "You must go. Your friend will be looking for you. If you need me just call, I can hear you."
With that, she pushed Drew out of her house and closed the door before Drew could say another word. Drew stood outside the house alone. He scratched his brunette hair and departed for the academy. The walk there was tiring but he soon made it drenched in sweat.
Serves me right for walking in broad daylight, he thought as he made his way up the stairs to the dorm.
He pushed open the dorm door to find his buddies lounging on the leather couch in front of the fireplace. He walked up to them after he dropped his bags in his room.
"Hey guys," he said as he dropped down onto the couch.
"My buddy Hank told me you were off at a sleepover with some old buds of yours." Regan eyed him suspiciously.
Drew smiled and nodded trying to act like he didn't do anything illegal. Illegal in Regan's world was to interact with his enemies, in this case, Kendra. He looked at his leader and opened his mouth to speak, nothing came out. Nobel, being the peacemaker he is, told Regan to clillax. In other words, he told his friend to chill and relax. Regan huffed and slumped back on the chair.
"Did you visit your mom?" Regan said. "It's okay if you did."
Drew nodded his head as he confirmed Regan's suspicion. He lied, to his leader, for the first time. It seemed to relax Regan a little. Drew felt really guilty. He excused himself to scurry to his room and have some me time. No-one questioned him so he just left.
"What is up with that guy?" Regan said as soon as Drew left the room. He put his head in his hands.
"This is something I can't wrap my head around," Nobel replied. "He seems to be acting really weird. I also saw him bleeding badly the other night."
"Which?" That got his attention.
"You know, the one where he had a stomach ache and didn't attend class." Nobel answered.
"Hank, what do you suspect?" Regan said and they both looked at Hank.
"Honestly buddy, I don't know." Hank shrugged. The three sat there in silence trying to figure out what was going on with their mage.
---
Drew entered his room and sagged against the doorway. He couldn't believe how his friends just started firing questions at him.
I didn't look that suspicious...did I?, He connected his ear with the door and listened to what his friends were talking about. They were talking about him.
Kendra, Drew thought about her because he had no one else to talk to, I wish you were here. My buddies talk about me and I haven't told them something huge. I would tell you because I feel like you won't judge me but, you aren't here. Why am I even saying this as if you can hear me. You can't and I'm weird.
Drew sighed and lay down on his bed, putting an arm on his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat. Somehow this helped him relax a little. He soon started to feel a little drowsy and fell asleep. Dreams found him again as always. This time he was in Kendra's house sitting on her couch drinking the same black liquid he had seen Kendra drink before he departed for the academy.
"Hey Drew," she said while sipping her drink. "Our deal?"
Drew looked at her dumbfounded. "What??"
Kendra raised an eyebrow at him. Drew opened his mouth like an 'o'. He looked at her and said, "I know you can't hear me even if I tell you. It's not the same as telling it in a dream. You cant hear me but I wish you were here."
Kendra smirked and got up. "I'll leave you to it then." Drew nodded and looked at her leave the room.
Drew woke up soaked in sweat. His back ached and he felt icky. Aw man! Why do I always sleep sweat?, He scowled while rubbing his sweaty face and slink into the toilet to take a cold shower.
He turned the tap on and freezing water blasted out at him. Drew squeaked in fright, not because he was scared, it was because he wasn't prepared for the sudden wave of cold that hit him. He quickly rubbed sage soap all over his skin and rinsed it off. He stepped out of the shower and dried himself off then went to his closet to put on some clothes. Once he emerged he saw the window was open.
"What?" He said under his breath as he went to close it. "I swear I closed it before I went to bed."
Cold wind blew into the room. The sky had a sort of orange-pink tint to it. It was evening already. Drew felt a sort of chill run down his spine and his hairs on his arms stood up a little. He turned around to see whether his squadron mates were around. They were not and Drew decided the rest had gone out for dinner. He shrugged and went back inside his bedroom only to find a dark figure standing in the shadows. Drew's fear level spiked up.
"What are you doing in my room?" His voice quivered, making him speak high pitched. He kept his cool but inside he was freaking out, a billion questions ran around inside his mind.
The figure laughed, "God Drew, your thoughts are so loud." The figure, or rather, she, because of the sound of the voice, stepped out of the shadows. It was Kendra. Drew sighed in relief, knowing he wouldn't be murdered by shadows.
"Why are you here, Kendra?" Drew said slowly.
The girl shrugged but answered his question. "Just a hunch. I felt the need to be here, also I wanted to explore your dorm. I have learnt to follow my hunched when they call. What's up?"
"Well...do you remember our deal? From last night? I need to tell you my side of it."
Kendra nodded, motioning for Drew to continue.
"Well...I..." Drew screwed his eyes shut and let his mouth spill his darkest secret. "...am a girl..."
To be continued...
