I let my eyes remain closed as we made the rest of our journey to the house, or rather my body demanded I do so. I was extremely tired and drained from today, maybe I needed a longer nap after all. But no matter how my body screamed for sleep, my subconscious would not allow for it until I was safe. I felt safer with Adrian which was why I was allowing this momentarily rest, but I knew we weren't totally safe until we were inside. Uncomfortable being this intimate with a total stranger for the amount of time I had already let it go on, I felt myself start to get anxious. Not exactly fearful, but wary of how easily I would allow myself to be vulnerable to someone I barely even know. "Have we even made any progress? At this rate I'm afraid I should have opted to crawling." Deciding to break the silence, I felt the slight rumble to his chest as he held back at laugh at my comment.
"I think I liked you better drained of all energy." He huffed, rolling his eyes as he looked down at me.
"Well, my energy has returned so I am good to walk now. Thank you." Waiting impatiently as he sighed and set me down, I saw that we had another fifty or so feet until we reached the house. "Great." Sighing myself this time, I looked both drearily and yet longingly at my home.
"I offered to carry you." Shrugged Adrian, putting his hands up to emphasize that this was all my own doing. "You were even mean enough to complain, I should be the one complaining." Smirking my way, I rolled my eyes at him and hid a chuckle as we continued on.
"It'll just be the two of us until Ronald arrives, Mo is away apparently." I grumbled miserably, I didn't like this surprise vacation that I was told nothing about.
"Don't sulk Rose, it's not a good look on you. It's not you, it's him. He needed a break from your craziness." Winking, I somehow felt better by his joke. "Come on, have you really not spent any time away from your grandfather?" Questioned Adrian, surprising me with his memory of our relation.
"Training to become an officer." I shrugged, admitting that this time apart was a bit much for me. Waiting for me to continue on my list, he suddenly stopped and looked at me shocked.
"Wait, that's it? You've only been apart for an extended amount of time once?" He asked, completely shell shocked with the fact that I had spent so much of my time with Mo.
"He raised me, he's basically all I've got." Quieting down, I glared at Adrian as he suddenly stood in front of me blocking my path. "Would you move." I grumbled, fighting to get past him.
"You said we were alone." He whispered fiercely, suddenly tense with his hand ready on his pistol. Confused, I quickly tried to peak around him to understand what to be looking for. Then I saw it, a little vehicle with blinding lights racing it's way up the path and making it's way toward my home. Squinting, I noticed that it was indeed just a cart, and my heart settled as I reached slowly for Adrian's gun and gently pushed his hand down to lower the weapon.
"It's the guards at the front gate, Ronald must have called to alert them to be on the lookout for us." I whispered, moving now at a faster pace to try and get to the house around the same time they'd arrive.
"Do you ever slow down and rest?" He huffed as I forced my legs to carry me on.
"Rest is for the weak?" I questioned as I recalled allowing him to carry me for what felt like an eternity. We could hopefully make it to my home in twenty minutes from the road.
"You do realize that you just unintentionally called yourself weak right?" He asked as I marched on ahead to the house. My body was so tired that I knew I would fall asleep the second that it touched the sheets of my bed, but I wouldn't feel safe until I was back inside the familiar walls.
