My mum hugs me tight as soon as I go to the living room to show my family the dress Fred bought for me specially for this day. They all knew about my plans to volunteer, but they don't know everything else Fred told me today. For them, there's still a chance I'm not coming out of there alive. And for me, there still is as well. And now I'm even more scared. If I don't volunteer, it's gonna be worst for every single one of us.
My sister is also coming to the reaping, she is elegible in age. I hug her tight as well. Her auburn hair braided like a crown hugging her head is perfect for her. Makes her seem like a cute innocent little girl.
My sister and me look nothing alike. She has auburn hair, and some big green eyes that could make you fall on your knees if you stare at them long enough. She is tall, but not as tall as me. She is still growing though, so she'll most likely get taller than me. Her freckles are all around her face, reaching her chest and the rest of her body. On the other hand, I don't have a single freckle, although I've got a lot of moles hidden on my chest. My hair is brown, not shining auburn like my sister's and dad's, but more like my mum's long hair. And my eyes, are a hazel colour that seems like it hasn't decided on a permanent colour to show. Nothing that can catch the capitol's interest. But apparently, it did already.
I look at my sister and smile. At least she's gonna be safe for her first year.
"Come on, Olivia. Let's go get something to eat before we part our ways." I say leading her to the table.
When we eat, I make her tell me everything I'd like to know before I go. She tells me how she choose to persuade a career in electricity, like the rest of the district. She tells me how there's this one guy in his class she likes, and that most likely likes her back as well. She tells me some gossip about school, and how everyone is paying more attention to her now with me and Fred on the tv. She makes jokes and we laugh and giggle together.
She is only 12 years old but I've always thought she was quite mature for her age. She spoke to me with the wise mind of someone who was past her teenage years, even though hers hadn't even started yet.
I'm going to miss this. I will. And the fact that this can be my last meal shared with my family breaks my heart.
The time is getting closer, and it's time for my sister and me to part our ways. We make our way to the central plaza, in front of the Hall of Justice. My sister isn't even scared today, but I can find a hint of a worried expression on her face. She is worried about me, and I'm worried about myself as well.
While we form line to register, I glance over at the entrance of the hall, which serves as stage. Sitting in a wooden chair in front of the white tiles of the hall, I find Fred. I laugh at his state, he is witnessing the reaping as a victor for the first time, he is uncomfortable and you can feel it.
