I've been on the plane for three hours. Leaving was hard as always. Saying goodbye never gets easier. I still feel the tears pushing through when I hug my mom and the need to say some smart last words to my dad. My mom has a habit of arriving everywhere early. So that is exactly what happened we arrived an hour early at the airport. We just sat there waiting to say goodbye for an hour.
On the plane I'm sitting next to a little boy I think he is eight. In front of us, there is his mom and sister. He wanted to sit next to the window so his mom asked if I would mind him to sit next to me. Now I usually not so fond of kids but this one seemed nice and honestly, I could use the company knowing I probably wouldn't be able to sleep on the plane.
I feel a little hand touching my arm "Madam? Can I ask you something?" I look at the little boy next to me.
I smile at him "Yes and please, call me Rosie".
"Okay, Rosie. How old are you".
His mom quickly turns around "Oliver you can't ask that to people you don't know".
"I assure you it is not a problem," I tell her and turn back too little Oliver "I'm nineteen, and how old are you".
"I'm almost ten" smart one.
"So, you are nine"
"I didn't say that" I see his mom smile.
His sister who looks like she is sixteen turns around "He is eight".
"Jane!" he cries out clearly not wanting me to know his young age. He crosses his arms and turns around dramatically, facing me again. "Why did you go to France?".
Curious little kid this one "I grew up in France, so I went back to see my mom and dad" I smile at him and return the question "Now why were you in France?"
"A gift from our dad" A big smile appears on his face "My sister always wanted to see Paris because of the clothes and boys I think." His sister turns around again sending him a death glare. "My mom is a big fan of art and French pastries like those little lunar things, croisints or something. Anyway, I went to see the beaches in Caen"
"Oh, a history fan I see" Caen is a place near Dunkirk. The beaches around that area were the areas were the important fights happened during world war two "You now I went there on a school trip once, it is really interesting".
After talking with Oliver for a while he fell asleep so did his sister Jane. I talked with their mom for a while. Her Name is Marie she studied art but got pregnant at an early age. When she got Jane, she decided to be a stay at home mom for a while. When jane turned eight, she got pregnant again. Her husband Blake and she decided to get married. She got Oliver and when he was old enough to go to school, she decided to buy an old warehouse and make it into an art gallery.
"Can I ask you a not so subtle question" she nods taking a sip of her water "Where is their dad. He gave you this trip, right? Why didn't he come to?".
"My husband got sick on New Year's Day. He has a history with cancer, they wanted to keep him under surveillance at the hospital." The smile she was previously wearing faded a little bit for a short moment.
"I'm sorry I hope he is okay"
"Yes, he will be. He forced us to go on this trip because we've already been postponing it for years, so he didn't want it to get delayed even more. Oliver will get history lessons for the first time next year so he was extremely excited to go so he would have some knowledge to show off. My husband took many work trips to France, so he knew exactly where we needed to go and wrote us a very detailed tour guide." She looks at her little boy and then at her daughter lovingly. I feel a slight pinch in my heart. She makes me miss my mom.
