CHAPTER 78 | DEFEND
___
LYCUS TIKAANI
I gradually awaken to the horrible stench of blood, flesh, and smoke. I opened my eyes, regaining my vision as things from a distance remained fuzzy. I can hear shouts, whimpering, corpses collapsing, and general mayhem. The intense red and orange flames appear to be making my eyesight adjust a little more difficult.
"What is going on?" I ask in hushed tones. But no response, just screaming—a lot of screaming outside.
A woman comes running up to me, her eyes wild and her hand reaching out to me, her body half turned into her wolf. "Lycus! You have to get up!" She screams before being dragged by another, leaving her howling in agony. I can see her legs wriggling frantically before she stops from the edges of my tent.
Her head then rolls inside. I jump from my bed and scoot away, hyperventilating. Blood squirted out from the slice of her neck and her eyes began to roll into the back of her head. I gulped and jumped off, running outside.
My ears perked up as I became more aware of what was going on. I leaped to my feet and dashed outdoors. When I looked around, I saw numerous wolves torn apart, engulfed in flames, resting on the ground with puncture holes in their throats. The village of Acwulf was engulfed in flames, and I stood there, trying to make sense of what was going on.
I looked up at the blood eclipse in the sky—the blazing sun hidden behind the red moon. The flames whirled, and the black clouds didn't even get in the way. A large blazing red eye appeared in the middle as I continued to look up at the eclipse. The eye reminded me of Rue, and immediately, sent chills through my bones, and my heart missed a beat or two. As it shone down on us, the eye glanced at every part of the world.
In the distance, Father was fighting, tossing other wolves into the flames that grew as tall as the forest trees. "Father!" I exclaimed as I dashed towards him.
He turns to face me, watching how my black fur covering my human skin, my bones forcibly elongating and altering shape, sometimes moving so dramatically that they rupture my skin. The change can take several minutes from start to finish, and the ultimate result is a creature that is part human and part wolf in varied amounts. Me being a Fenrir, sometimes parts of my body are torn apart, creating deep scars on my human form in multiple places.
Wolves roared and charged at the invaders, ripping and tearing their attackers' limbs away. Father opens his jaw and bites a rogue vampire in half, severing her body. Many people wailed as guts were spilt in our earth. I swiped down the hoards with my tail and rose up on my hind legs, soon after crashing on top of the army with my front paws. I noticed that when they die, a mist of darkness expels out of their body and floats into the air, especially how there was a reddish rose print on their necks.
"Why are our kind turning their backs on us?!" shouts a lady as she fights back. She yelled and slashed another wolf who had gone insane with her claws. "This isn't right, none of it is! The Gods wouldn't dare to let this happen, right?"
Father takes a step back, gasping for air. "I'm not sure, but we can't rely on the Gods just now. We just have one other and the rest of our family who hasn't gone completely mad," father replies, gazing up at the starless night sky. "The darkness that lingers in the air could be the source of this," he murmurs. "They are not who we used to recognize them as behind those eyes of lost lunacy. They are immersed in the horrible time conflux."
My thoughts were on Markus as I continued to struggle. I was afraid he'd be harmed, alone, and probably dead, surrounded by his own handful of foes. I clinched my teeth, hoping—praying—that after this fight, I'd be able to go to him as soon as possible. His realm isn't too far away from mine.
