The sun beat down harshly and the wind was at a stand still. The water was at a shortage since the beginning of summer, streams and rivers becoming dust.
The air was eerily quiet along with the Banthas who were typically rambunctious this time of day. Feeding time.
"Come on." Jedha clicked her tongue to the roof of her mouth, herding the animals into the barn.
As the suns were setting she caught a glimpse of a few Resistance shuttles passing over, her face turning down into a scowl.
"You still gazing up at the sky?" A voice rang out.
Turning over her shoulder, her neighbor, Dain Carlton, came into view. A scrawny looking fella with scraggly brown hair and the palest skin she's ever seen on a guy.
"I thought I told you about what happens when you stare at the suns too long." Dain squinted as he grabbed the Bantha's feed out of Jedha's hands.
"You did, just hoping I actually might go blind one day." She nodded as her boots scrapped against the dirt.
Dain quickly gave her stifled laugh as he tossed the feed into the stalls, the Banthas humming amongst themselves in satisfaction. "So how'd the meeting go." Dain asked.
The meeting... right.
"Successful." She quickly snipped slipping off her gloves and blotting the skin above her tank top.
Dain hummed in response as the two made their way to the back of the barn. "H-How come you never really talk about these 'meetings'?" He asked shyly swiping the dirt off of his hands along the sides of his pants.
Jedha let out a huff as she continued out of the barn, closing the doors. "Can you help me with this." She asked him.
He nodded dragging the spare chain link over to her as they quickly wrapped it around the hooks of the doors and locking it in place. "There a storm tonight?" Dain asked curiously.
"Yeah, I'm not taking any risks tonight especially with the FO raiding planets left and right."
He nodded as the two walked back into town kicking rocks through the dust as they chatted.
Jedha has known Dain since he arrived here. A little older than she was but she always liked to be the boss. She hadn't really had a real friend until Dain arrived but they soon became inseparable. Jedha's snippy attitude and Dain's curiosity made them a duo to not be taunted with.
"I think Bertha's gonna be ready to give birth any day now." Dain muttered skipping over a protruding branch.
"You think so?" Jedha replied, glancing to him periodically.
Dain nodded. "She's been real lazy lately, hasn't been eating. I think it's normal for Banthas... isn't it?"
Furrowing her brows, Jedha nodded, "Uh... yeah. Nothing to worry about." She lied. Anytime a complication like this happens, Dain makes it his number one priority for the rest of the week or until the problems solved.
Dain cracked a smile, "Good, I was starting to get worried about her."
The two sat in their usual spot overlooking the town. Secluded and quiet. Wind chimes from the town could be heard with every gust. A melody of chimes filled the air along with chirping bugs.
